• Guest, wishing you a happy New Year from the MGEVs.com team.
We hope you have a peaceful and prosperous 2026.

What if EVs came first and someone invented a petrol car?

Well I only checked because I just knew you couldn't have missed it when it was first posted. 😁
Yes I noticed you liked it as well, but you didn't claim you hadn't seen it before. 😂

🤣 I'm obviously losing my marbles. 🤪
Still it was well worth a 2nd post and a 2nd like. Very funny. 🙂👍
Gonna try and post that, on another forum, (with my new found Link skills) 😉
See what the ICE brigade think of it. 😀

Not to be that person, but for those interested, EVs pretty much came first, just couldn't evolve quick enough I guess.

Yes, battery limitations meant that EVs could not compete with fossil fuels on
  • Battery longevity
  • Driving range (weight and size of batteries)
  • Charging/refuelling speed
Until EV-specific Lithium-ion batteries were developed in the early 2000s.

But it is strange that EVs weren't used as local run-around vehicles.

I remember in the late '60's, the local newsagent paper delivery was with a VW thing converted to electric ..... from memory it was 144vdc and used only 2nd gear .... the whine of the forklift motor as he launched around the corner of our street, step uphill right turn on the flattened peak of the hill or a fairly busy road ..... he would go for it flat pedal to make sure he was on the correct side of the road by the time another vehicle crested the hill from either direction.
He was a retired forklift mechanic and it ran on nicad batteries, I'd say the run was roughly 20 miles and steep hill country, but it out performed the average 1300 VW beetle up the hills .....

We didn't see electric milk carts over here, always Holden panelvans, overloaded to the max  Loved driving the milk truck in the early hrs of the morning, 11 yrs old, barely reach the pedals and see over the dashboard
I worked two different milk runs before school to get enough money together for my early teen projects and workshop equipment.
Lawn mower powered billy carts, modifying chopper style pushbikes from the dump into mini bikes, lead to buying bush basher motorbikes and fixing them up .... I guess I was in the mechanical trade by the time I started high school ...... 11yrs old .... took years before people would trust me to work on their cars ...... started out with my sister's boy friends cars, then their friends cars .....
