What makes you feel old?

I don't think he has a clue what old really is!
He didn't even mention:
the wind-up phone
the wind up record player
what speed did an LP records turned at
what speed a single song record turned at before the new still records were introduced ....

For bonus old people points:
what term was used for each size of the new type of record
what speed did each record type spin?

12 inch LP's played at 33 1/3 rpm
7 inch singles played at 45 rpm

Remember saying Exchange name and three digit number when answering the telephone
I don't but I do remember my grandmother had a party line where you had to press a button on top of the phone before dialling and the old dear opposite used who shared the line trying to listen in.

yes 78s and you had a little inkwell type container full of needles, when the record sounded scratchy, you changed the needle. before my time there were the drum recordings, never actually saw one being played. Now that's the ultimate, if you remember playing one of those you really are old!!!

Just before my time there were 10 and 12 inch shellac ones that played at 78 rpm and the record player we had as a child did have the option to play them.
The other size was called an EP, spun at 331/3 rpm and had short albums on them, or the best of a certain group .... also the classics such as Edvard Gieg's Peer Gynt Suite and Classic from Paul Robeson including Ol' Man River ..... my father was right into that stuff and had a voice nearly as deep as Paul Robeson and would sing along

I don't just feel old now, I feel archaic

I showed the 18yr old lad at work an actual 5.25"floppy disc, this was after telling him to click on the floppy disc to save the file(on the pc).
He asked what one was .

There's a box full of them at work from years gone by.
Then I showed him the upgrade, a 3.5" floppy(not floppy) disc, and said it could save 1.44mb:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

You're old if you can recall watching Tales of the Riverbank in good ol' 405-lines... Hammy and Roderick <sigh>
I liked GP (the Guinea Pig) the most... talking of TV, how about...

  • Patch and Petra on Blue Peter, with Peter Perves, John Noaks and Valarie Singleton?
( the common kids from the other side of the village watched Magpie instead!)
  • Jon Pertwee as Dr Who
  • Top Cat
  • Marine Boy
  • Magic Roundabout (of course)
and a bit later in life...
  • 6 Million Dollar Man
  • Are You Being Served
  • Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em
and - of course -
- Fawlty Towers :)

5.25" - pfff! you're a young 'un... I started with cassette tape based storage, then upgrade to the 8" diskette :)

I'm pretty certain EPs spun at 45rpm (at least in the UK).
I guess there were different markets that record companies catered to around the world.
Most of the EPs in Australia were still 7", although there were some 10", I remember dad had a Winefred Attwell 10" EP, for a classically trained pianist, she could play honkey-tonk and Boogie Woogie like she was born to it ...

EP, Extended Play. I have some upstairs from the 60s, 7 inch, same size as a single and still played at 45rpm, the grooves are much tighter. Mine have just 2 tracks per side.
I think the more 'modern' ones might have more tracks and and maybe play at 33rpm, but I don't have any of them.
