Firstly, i have just joined the forum so be kind and gentle.

i have decided to purchase a used MG5 (prob 2021 or 2022)and i have read my way through many threads on here to gain better knowledge. The problem now is that i have read so much i have confused myself. So rather than be a pest and ask a barrage of questions like the ill informed moron i am, i thought i would just keep it to the bare minimum with a few important questions.

1. Is there a specific EV charger i should consider buying (will shift to Octopus Intelligence tariff)?
2. Anything specific i should look out for on the car when purchasing a used model?
3. other than interior finish is there any other differences between Excite and Exclusive trim?

thanks in advance.

Hi, I have had a 2021 MG5 SR Excite for over two years and done 44k milage.
1, I had an Ohme to get IOG then a Wallbox and will shortly switch to my Zappi which I got as it works well with my solar and house battery.
2, check the SOH state of health of the battery. Other checkmare the same as an ICE.
3, not a lot of difference, USB in the rear on the Exclusive plus leather? seats but the cloth of the Excite is better in the summer.

1) The charger that best suits the tariff you want to use. The car won't care.

2) Check it hasn't been used as a taxi. It will have a very restricted warranty.

3) Exclusive has roof bars (75kg load), if that is important/useful. Also has all the electronic bells and whistles.

Exclusive gets as few extras: roofs rails, heated seats, electric driver seat, auto wipers, folding ‘ears’ etc. Pleather seats on Exclusive are sweaty in summer, Excite has fabric seats and enough bells and whistles for most. Either way it’s a great car 🙂

Insurance in the LR exclusive was £100 cheaper than that SR due to the MG Pilot.

Check battery state of health and signs of being used as a taxi.

The pre-fl 5 had clear glass (no tinting/uv coating) cannot reccomend highly enough that you get them tinted. Being broiled alive in summer traffic is not the one.

Wow some excellent replies with stuff i would have never have thought of. Thank you so much, i have added those to my mental checklist.
Thank you all

Plenty of info above but I would also add go for the long range (WLTP 250 miles). For many the standard range is fine but for the little extra second hand you will appreciate it.

Yes i have kinda come to that conclusion and that just made my mind up.

Anyone bought an EV off Cinch? They seem to be slightly cheaper but i think i am too old school to take a leap of faith in buying a car on the internet without seeing it. I know they have money backs and warranties if you decide its not the car for you but it makes life very difficult if i have to keep returning for whatever reason.

Oh they get very toasty if the cars been in the sun, when I bought mine because they were selling off a load of pre-reg'd cars the price difference between the Excite and the Exclusive was pretty small (I think less than 500)

I looked up some on Cinch before I bought my 5 . Almost alll of them had bodywork damage ( scratches , some deep and long ) and even chipped windscreens ...unimpressed :cautious:

One thing I learnt about buying a used EV. DONT buy it from a normal car dealer.
I did just that bought mine from a reputable local dealership but not one with any knowledge or back up to service an EV.
I had a minor problem with mine, and if it had been ICE then their mechanic would have sorted it out the same day.
But they really washed their hands of it as they did not have the right equipment, was not aware of what to do with an EV?
So I was told to go and arrangement with a local MG dealership.
But they could not take it there and they couldn’t fit it in for 6 weeks for a diagnosis.
great car, but no real idea of what to do,
In the end it turned out I knew more about EV’s than they did.
This is where the car dealer would get the problem sorted, but now very few mechanics have the necessary skills.
So always consider getting an EV from a reputable and honest street
There’s not much they can do to solve any issues.
SO DO NOT BUY FROM A
JUST ANY OLD RETAILER MG )

What was minor problem with your MG5 and did you get it resolved?

5 warning lights on display. Resolved myself with help from a colleague. Took a bit of research. But dealer had no idea nor equipment to sort it out. Not used to dealing with EV’s. Hence best to buy from main dealer.

Didn’t even plug into the obd2 and at least lookup the codes? That’s just terrible.

I’d understand if they got a HV fault code and couldn’t touch the HV system but to not even run a diagnostic?

You might not need a "wall charger" .... I'm not doing big daily mileage... and happily charge with a 13amp 3 pin plug overnight.
Yes.... I pay more for the electricity without a "deal" using a high power wall charger... but when wall chargers cost £1k fitted.... that's a lot of kWh I need to buy to offset the outlay.... and years before I get into saving money.

You can still get on the Octopus Go tariff with a granny EVSE just not IOG as you need an Ohme, Wallbox or Zappi.

British Gas EV tariff - only requirement is that you have an EV and a smart meter. Obviously, there's no dialogue between car/charger/supplier, but I just set my car to charge midnight to 5am and plug in the granny cable. Simple really.

You'll hear people saying that 13 amp sockets aren't built for such a sustained load. However, I can't imagine any ring main that can't handle a 2-bar electric fire (2kW) being on for 5 hours. The granny charger has a load only slightly more than that (2.3kW), so charging shouldn't cause the circuit to overheat. If you want to be sure, get a socket marked 'EV' on the back.

I've run my MG branded granny charger in a relative's Victorian era wiring for nearly 30 hours straight without issues.

Personally, after a few test drives, the Exclusive 61kWh was a no brainer. Even just climate control set by a specific value is great for comfort and improving range by using less energy on the heating without any effort. Keyless entry is also much more of a blessing than I ever expected it to be.

Regarding wall chargers, I'd look across a few energy suppliers for future proofing before you pull the trigger. For me, wallbox won for having the best range of configuration options and for supporting the greatest range of ev tariffs.

I bought an MG5 EV off Cinch and I would urge anybody thinking of buying from them, DO NOT DO IT!! This was my experience:
30 minutes prior to delivery I had a call saying they couldn't find the wheel bolt locking key and I could choose to delay delivery until they could obtain one or accept it and wait for the key to arrive. As I had paid for the car and insured it I decided on the latter.
On arrival I found that some plastic caps on the bolts were missing, but none of the wheels had locking bolts and that the car does not come as standard with them.
I was given no opportunity to drive the car on arrival, the delivery driver just wanted me to sign the acceptance form and be on his way. He did not know why there was no documentation with the car not even a handbook or service record.
On first driving the car I found a warning triangle was present on the screen which indicated a TPMS low warning signal. I went into the cars diagnostic system and found that the offside front tyre did not register a pressure but all other tyres were at 2.2. As the actual pressure in the tyre was the same as all others it was clear that the TPMS on that wheel was faulty.
I phoned Cinch which took almost an hour as I was placed on hold for about 15 minutes with a cacophony of noise playing, only to be cut off, and then having to redial, eventually getting through on the third attempt. (I have phoned Cinch at least 10 times since and have undergone the same marathon) I requested that I take the car to my local MG dealer just up the road but they insisted I take it to Quickfit. This I did and Quickfit found that the TPMS sensor was missing having been replaced with a standard valve at some time. They were unable to supply a new sensor or calibrate one if they could, lacking the right equipment. They inspected the tyres and reported the tread depth on the two front tyres was very low and not considered safe, so they took photos of the tyres. They contacted Cinch and got approval to replace them.
On getting home I phoned Cinch (you've guessed it) and requested that I take it to my local MG dealer to have the problem sorted. They said my local main MG dealer was not on their list and I should take it to their approved dealer the other side of Gloucestershire a very long journey. I protested at this as being unreasonable but after 2 days of frustration being swapped from one agent to another, on phone and email, one Agent agreed that I could use my local MG dealer if I obtained a quote, so they could send an order to the garage. This I did but was then told, when nothing happened after a while, that they were waiting to get approval. When I emailed them back to ask how long approval would take I received a reply saying we are temporarily closed and we will contact you on our return. This message was sent to me some 2 weeks ago and I have heard nothing.
This is a company that claims to sell cars with no Faff!! Don't fall for that one like I did.
I have had the TPMS replaced now at my own expense and all seems fine.
You might ask why I did not reject the car and get my money back, which at times I did consider, but their business plan is very crafty as it seems to revolve around once the customer has paid for the car, insured it, maybe taxed it, spent a long time finding the car and realising that returning it will be a faff, and if one reads the return procedure which has clauses in it which might make returning it quite protracted, then they are unlikely to return it. Getting the customer past the 14 day return guarantee would seem to be a beneficial ploy, even though statutorily I have heard you have a month to return it. What even more FAFF.
