Wind deflectors

Hi.
I’ve never been interested in this accessory before, but it seems to be popular in some places.
Could someone explain what it's for? Is it just for looks, or does it also reduce noise at high speeds?

I had them on previous cars and it reduces buffering wind coming in when driving with open windows and noise, hopefully thats the case with the mg!
