Winter Tyres

Does the panel have a view on appropriate winter tyres for the S5? I know that EVs have different standard tyres to ICE cars, but are they available as winters?

A second question relates to wheels.

Historically, I have paid £60 twice a year to have the tyres swapped.

Maybe it makes more sense to just buy four cheap wheels and swap them myself.

Is there any real downside to cheap steel wheels for three months a year, if I don't care about the looks?
I used winter tyres over many years but now retired don’t drive much over winter and have gone for full set of all season. So no wheel swapping. If in Scotland or wales I’d go for winters though.

I have a cut in the sidewall of one of my factory fit tyres, it is no longer legal.

I would like to change them all for all-seasons when they wear out, so it seems a bit silly to replace this one, at 4000 miles, with a summer tyre. bit it also seems a bit silly to replace them all at 4000 miles.

So, would it be ok just to change this one for all-seasons and leave the rest of summers?

No, I wouldn't even fit winter tyres in pairs myself, it would have to be all 4, but definitely not a single tyre. Why not look for a used or part-worn tyre of the same size and make on ebay.

I sold my original summer tyres at 2300 for £220 and replaced with full set of Goodyear all season for £520. I’ve now got much safer, full set of tyres that’ll be a great improvement in the cold months. Much much safer in colder weather inc snow and ice. Cost a few pounds to swap but I’m much safer. Much less likely to lose control.
Essential to have full set. Never mix summer/winter/all season !

Depends on how many miles you do. I fitted Michelin Cross Climates to my Dacia Duster (2WD) 4 years and 28k miles ago and they're still going strong - all year round. Much better in the winter and fine in the summer months.
What I should have said was I fitted the All Seasons just to the front wheels on the Duster, the original (summer) rears were still ok. I never had an issue with that mix in the following 28k miles - BUT the Duster is front wheel drive. For info I've just replaced all 4 on that car with Goodyear Vector 4seasons

Good idea. Or replace all four with Michelin CrossCimate tyres and sell the other 3 on eBay.

No way I would just have 1 all season tyre on a car. Probably be OK in normal conditions, but in snow you would have grip on just 1 wheel, try and brake with that and it would probably spin you round.

Id neve mix summer, all seasons, winter tyres on the same axle. I wouldn't even have two all seasons on one axle and two summer on the other, I know some do and it's legal to do that but I wouldn't mix them in Scotland.

All seasons are what I always replace my stock tyres with when they are done, never bothered with winter tyres, all season been brilliant in the snow.
No issues with fitting them to an EV
