I would use the handbrake (cable and lever type) to hold the car.

Now that's one thing I do miss, not for holding at lights, but being able to control severe over steer.

Remember trying it once in my VC Valiant, but it was an under the dash ratchet type .... we went round and round and round ..... fortunately didn't hit anything, and never tried that again until I had a handbrake between the seats with a button that stopped it locking in the up position ...... certainly fun days

I remember practicing Handbrake Turns in a field when I was young. Was waiting to pick up my brother and used the delay to improve my technique when there was nothing to hit. Then went to collect him and was going home. As I was leaving a Cop Car came down the one way lane the other way. I pulled off to let them through but they were there for me. They wanted to know if the car was stolen, I had the rego papers and was able to prove ownership. They then started to say it was reported I had been driving dangerously. I explained what I was doing and the reason I was doing it there as it was a safe space and I did not have access to a dedicated facility like they did.
They let me go but said they may be in touch, they never did.
