Charged to 100% for a long(ish) trip

I'm all for limits where appropriate, indeed there are times when a posted limited can be too high for the prevailing conditions, after all these are the maximums set, not necessarily a goal to reach. What I object to are arbitrary speeds with no reason. We have all seen, I'm sure, a nationwide reduction in limits for no apparent reason, in fact this phenomenon appears to be Word Wide, so what's going on???
Apparently the nationwide reductions were to reduce pollution, also in effect on a strip of motorway near me, the M1 near Sheffield, Tinsley viaduct, where the limit has been reduced from 70mph to 60.

I could understand that in a town environment but a motorway?? I haven't seen crowds of folk standing in the hard shoulder gave you? The bottom line I reckon is Government is gradually trying to make personal transport a thing of the past.

I seem to recall that the Tinsley Viaduct is (as the name implies) built over the remnants of a steelmaking town underneath . Any & all pollution will therefore "fall" or "spill" off the motorway onto the urban streets below...

I'm with you cars are safer than they have ever been reducing speed further isn't ideal for anyone. Gridlock and halting traffic to crawl isn't helping anyone.

Absolutely. My van objects to going under 30 mph in 4th, so how is dropping down another gear going to help, never mind the increased fuel consumption?

A section of local dual carriageway, has had its speed limit reduced from a LONG standing 70 Mph down to 50 Mph.
This section is monitored by elevated yellow average speed camera's in both directions.
At the commencement of this speed reduction, there has been sign's erected to inform you that this mandatory reduction in speed, has been enforced to help lower emissions and therefore improve the air quality in this area.
Okay ......... That is fine (y).
So based on this sound environmental principle, if I am caught exceeding the 50 mph speed limit in a zero emission EV vehicle, am I still breaking the law ? 🤣 .
Who is paying for all this load of "mumbo jumbo" - we are !.

450,000 BEVs on the road in the UK.

140,000 Buses and coaches
500,000 HGVs
820,000 other vehicles
1,400,000 motorcycles
4,600,000 LGVs
33,000,000 diesel/petrol cars

So around 99% of vehicles will be polluting on the road.

I think there is a long way to go before we have no ICE vehicles, if ever. Certainly won’t happen in what remains of my time on this planet.

I wonder if they'll put the limits back up when everyone is driving full EVs ?
New dual signs maybe, 70 for zero emissions and 50 for others.

Gawd, I hope not, there's enough carnage on the roads as it is!
And you think that paralizing traffic and making trips longer resulting in more tired drivers will solve that problem? Cars are the safest they have ever Bern in human history and are only becoming safer year after year

It's not the cars that are the problem....

And you think that slowing people down will make them rush less? Say I finish work at 1700 I am home to see my kids and just in time for diner at 1730 if you reduce speed of my roads do you think people like me will just be happy to get there for 17:45 instead or will they rush to get there on time resulting in more dangerous driving and overtaking? Reducing speed doesn't make people rush less it makes them rush more

Strewth seems you might be part of the problem 😆

In a nutshell there's one of the problems people (perhaps like you) create - this whole "just in time" thing.

I would hope that people would adjust their "important" timings to allow for safe progress whatever the speed limit is or will be.

Why “just in time for dinner” at 17:30 ?

You could hope but this is naive hope. We can either seek solutions that will work with human nature or one that try to brute force the way and be ineffective if not just lead to more danger. You can hope and with that people would adjust but they won't. If you need evidence of it go to any place that just put new surface on a road and tell me if anyone is driving 20 in what used to be 60 zone as it's normally a case for few weeks?

I am not disputing that it would be good if people adjusted I am disputing idea that they will. This is making road more dangerous not less.

The corollary argument to yours is remove all speed limits & let the people decide how fast to go?

Does that make sense to you?
