MG ZS EV Connected but not charging

HI Everyone,

We've just bought a 2020 / Dec MG ZS EV, and since driving it home 3 days ago I have ONLY had 'Connected but not Charging" come up when using the 'granny' cable .

I've changed the socket I plug into in the house, to the one for our Cooker - so the ampage must be OK. I'm doing everything correctly at the car end (locking etc - get the 'click' when the plug locks into the socket ).

Ive even tried isolating our solar PV array, to ensure thats not messing things up.
But so far no joy.

Our cable has just arrived this afternoon, so I'm off to the nearest Charging Point tomorrow Fingers Crossed.

The sales team have been no help - and of course the Service dept at my dealership dont work weekends. HO HUM

Any thoughts, other than those mentioned aboove would be gratefully received.

At home, do you have any wifi data over your mains (a mains wifi extender or Sky Q box) as this is known to cause problems with charging. If so, turn it off and try charging.

There were one or two came with duff granny chargers in 2020.
Are the leds on the granny indicating that it's working ?

Hi all

New to the forum 👋🏻

I am having a similar issue:

Bought a 2019 MG ZS last Friday, brought it home and tried to charge on my EO mini charger. Bog standard no frills version, no smart charging. It wouldn’t charge. Tried with two type 2 leads (one an Ohme) no luck. My i3 is charging fine.

The Granny charger works, 7kw pod point Tesco works, 12kw BP pulse post works, rapid charge works, parents Zappi works.

EO have explained the whole WiFi extender issue to me, we don’t have any but went nuclear and shut the power down to the house on the consumer unit in case we have something interfering I’m not aware of. Still no luck.

The EO charger prepares itself ready to charge and sits waiting for a signal from the car but it never happens…

I have it booked into MG erdington next week to check over the firmware etc but I’m not convinced they’ll find anything wrong. Am I missing something?

Any help greatly appreciated!

Also if I have to make a charger change does anyone have a Wallbox Pulsar Plus, is it any good and does it work with your MG?

It's not wifi extenders that's the problem is ethernet over power cables that is the problem. Some people don't know they have them but sky use then to give you a sky box in another room. Just in case I thought I would mention this.

Check that the charging timer in the car is not on.

If the car works on the granny, a fast EVSE and rapid unit then it must be a problem with your EO, has anyone else plugged into it and it worked ok?

Yes. My bmw i3 works and my parents e-Niro does too.

I tend to agree with you about the EO, but as other cars work EO don’t want to know.

i ruled this out last night by turning off all the electricity to the house.

I think you said your car was a 2019 model ?.
If so, it’s one of the first edition models to arrive into the country.
The early models did have a problem not being able to delay charge and this was rectified fairly early with a software update.
I know you are not trying to delay charge, but it would be worth getting the dealer to check if it has received the latest updates
Our previous Gen1 ZS EV arrived November 2019 and had the software update prior to delivery.
A lot of these Gen1 ZS EV’s have not had any of the updates applied to them !.
Not that it’s directly connected to your charging problem, but has the car had the Comfort 2 update done ?.
This may offer an idea if the car has been updated at all.
Do you have the outside temperature showing on the info unit and way to many warning bongs going off on the car ?.
A sure sign it has not received the Comfort 2 update.
Nothing to do with the charger issue, but it offers a brief / rough insight into what stage the car is sitting at, software wise.
As the Granny works okay at home and the car charges okay both at a public 7 kw post plus it charges your parents car fine from the EO unit, then it has to be a incompatibility issue between the MG and your current wall box surely ????.
How old is your EO unit ?.
Have you spoken to EO yet, maybe the unit needs a firm wear update ?.
It’s a process of elimination now I guess.

Thanks for the lengthily reply 🙂

Car was registered dec 19, it’s due in the garage next week so I’ll see if there are any updates due. Service history is up to date (2 services done in Gloucester) but one was not uploaded to MG database. Makes me sus the service team didn’t do a full job in the first place.

I’m on my second EO mini unit following a failure of the first, replacement under warranty. The original model style though is over three years old now and is not a smart charger.

Has your car had the "Comfort 2" software update, or the BMS update for that matter ?.
Maybe it's time to consider a newer wall box maybe ??.

What constitutes the comfort 2 update?
It generally a customer paid for option on the Gen 1 ZS EV.
Here is the list of items that signify's the Comfort 2 update.
I had my previous Gen 1 ZS EV done - it makes a big difference.

Comfort 2 update - info from MG website

( NB - if you purchased your car after mid June 2020, the car should have had the Comfort 2 update installed and therefore bongs etc dealt with. If you are being asked to pay for this update in 2021 as a new purchaser, you should definitely query this.)

During the lifespan of a vehicle model, various changes can be made to interior trim, exterior cosmetics or system functions to ensure that it features cutting edge technology and remains attractive to potential buyers. MG ZS EV models manufactured after mid-June 2020, will have a newly developed 2nd generation of Comfort System Operation installed on the car. This is now available for customers who wish to benefit from these later updates on earlier build models.
Whilst all the below features involve software changes to key components on your vehicle, the updated software is not available to cars with 1st Generation software as a ‘warranty upgrade’. MG’s warranty is there to cover the cost of repair or replacement of a failed part due to a manufacturing defect, and not for updates/upgrades, and will therefore be chargeable. Please speak to your MG dealer to find out associated charges for this update.
This new 2nd generation of Comfort System Operation includes changes to:
  • Faster system self-check when powering ‘ON’
  • Infotainment volume maintains and restarts at previous volume setting after powering ON/OFF
  • Auto High Beam system disable option available in menu settings
  • General warning chime quality improvements and reduced volume
  • Warning chimes reduced for MG Pilot and Key Reminder
  • Vehicle temperature and temperature alarm featured in the instrument display
  • Vehicle range always on display in instrument pack
  • Vehicle can be unlocked during A/C charging, when re-locked charging automatically resumes

Ah ok, yes the car has that update.

I don’t have charge start when unlocked

Hello, my MG ZS EV (Trophy) is now for three months running fantastic. Just one issue, at home 7kW Type 2 charger works very well, with no problem at all. But outside charging on public stations with Type 2 (43 kW) or CCS is very unreliable. It originally used to charge outside very well, but I stopped using outside charging since I got home a 7kW charger. After that, most of the time, when I try charging at a public station, it is very unreliable (8 out of 10 times, it won't charge on fast Type 2 or CCS with three pins in the top plug). With this, the work commute is fine, but taking the car on a long journey, I feel very anxious. Spoke to a dealership, but they don't seem to know about such issues. Did anyone else feel such a thing? Or, am I missing something very basic here? Thanks. - Kunal
Hi, I’m having similar issues with my ZS ev (mark 2) I was travelling to London recently from the midlands and the charger didn’t work on multiple sites. I actually had the EV tech at the rapid charger on the service station and he couldn’t get it to work either. Between the pair of us, we also couldn’t get the damn thing to come out either! Eventually it worked but there was no difference in the working attempt to the times it didn’t work.
I am now struggling to charge it tonight at home and despite multiple attempts to plug and unplug it isn’t working :(
Final point, it often gets stuck in the charge point and will not come out for love or money despite unlocking car etc. I feel a trip to the dealer is going to happen. It’s a shame as it’s a great car other than these issues.
