MG4 Snagging list after 1000m

I think it's just the sensitivity of the detector is wrong - it's tuned for a high-brightness environment, so normal UK lighting seems "dark" for the sensor and so the lights come on. I recall reading that MG are planning a software patch to tweak the sensitivity.

Apparently, again its all part of the modern obsession with "safety". It seems that people were driving off with just DRL on and because they are so bright, assumed they had headlights on. Because of that it's now mandatory for headlights to come on automatically and have to be switched off each time if not required.
According to the page 49 of manual they should respond to the ambient light:
When the vehicle is powered on, the AUTO lighting system is turned on by default, which will automatically switch the side lamps/switch illumination on and off according to the intensity of current ambient light.

In that case, lets hope @siteguru is right about a software patch!

Let's hope so.

Yes...that makes sense. If you have DRL's they are normally always on when driving but some auto headlights are too sensitive to light.
Australia is probably more sunny than the UK most of the time but often on a dull day the headlights on my 2017 ICE vehicle will come on or even just after the sun goes down when it is still light.
However, in my case the auto lights are not on by default and can be turned off permanently but maybe things have changed now for all vehicles in the name of 'safety'.

The AC noise is more of a ticking on mine.
If you’ll excuse the pun, the headlights are one of the few highlights on my car.
Great on dip, fine on main.
The auto function is a mess though, pleases itself.
Doesn’t dip when it should and nearly got me into a road rage argument the other night when it went onto full beam right behind a car on a dual carriageway.
I manually dipped it quick, but I could see the driver in front gesticulating, he quite rightly must have been wondering WTF.
I’ve not reported it as a fault, what’s the point.
I had a similar issue yesterday. For whatever reason the auto high beam came on with a car in front me. I switched it off, only for it to come back on again. The car in front must have a thought I was flashing him.

I like the idea of the auto beam, but it not always best to use on country lanes, so I will de-activate it from now on

This happened to me last night. I can only assume that ice had affected the sensor.

  1. Drivers door button to unluck the car doesnt work anymore

Ive had an issue with my drivers side door button too but it would unlock and lock the car over and over - was in the dealer today to have it looked at but sods law it stopped doing it yesterday!

Yep, same here last night. I'd turned the auto high beam off, but the car went in for the update on Monday and they switched it back on. I don't getting it to stay off, and have the lights turn themselves off when I leave the car, is a like when I used to play fighting games on the PlayStation - hit the light switch in combinations of lots of different directions until it gives in!

I just cannot understand why all these technology issues such as wonky SatNav, LKA , auto headlight dipping, faulty locking etc. etc. are occurring with the MG4.
Also the fact that in many cases you cannot permanently disable certain tech.
Most of this technology is sourced from third parties who also supply it to other EV and ICE vehicle manufacturers who do not seem to be having the same dramas.
Is it something to do with quality control and the way it is all applied to the MG4 to keep costs down?

Plenty of issues with all cars, there's been cases of BMWs locking people in cars.

Toyota had the wheels literally fall off their EV.

Ford had breaking issues with the Mustang-E.

Renault had an over zealous earth detection system that stopped many a Zoe from charging on completely safe systems.

Jaguar has had issues with LG Chem supplied batteries due to a design fault, which caused thermal runaway.

Tesla had issue with phantom breaking and collision detection not working correctly.

It's very easy to look at other cars with rose tinted glasses but there is no completely faultless car, what is important as what we've come to a general consensus of is how the manufacturers deal with these issues which is where at times MG appears lacking.

Yes, that's correct but I am referring in particular to the MG4 technology mentioned by many owners here that is giving dramas.
This same technology is supplied to other car brands both EV and ICE by third party manufacturers and the same MG4 issues do not appear to be showing up in those cases.
Of course there are all sorts of other issues with other vehicles as you indicate but I am just referring to the current MG4 problems.
I am just puzzled to understand why this same tech works fine when fitted to other brands but not MG4's.
That is why I suggested possible quality control issues and the well known oil leak dramas seem to confirm this as well as the poor after sales service.

Light beam/reach in darkness - Even at the furthest setting the reach of the headlight is dangerously short. Auto Full beam is ok if a bit twitchty but even following a car at a safe distance there is a void of light. I wonder if this would pass an MOT light test in current form?
My Trophy had the same problem, which I have now fixed. Someone asked for a photo showing how you do it, so here it is! What you need is a 6mm Allen key inserted in the adjuster on the back of the headlight (the outer of the two adjusters, see arrow). I rotated the Allen key round five times anti-clockwise to get mine in the right ballpark - on both lights, obviously. Be careful not to make it go too high . . . I've just tested it on the road, and nobody flashed me!

Edit: To state the obvious, the photo shows the allen key in position - this does not come with the car! (It is easier to rotate the key if it is in the other orientation).

Almost everyone IS having the same drama with other EV makes! Many makes have awful problems.

I think this is for three reasons:

1. The complexity of modern cars, particularly in software. I have heard that they are 10x as complicated in their software as a Boeing 777 because of all the latest safety/automation systems and the lack of rigorous testing practices.

2. The massive increase in dependency on software and promise of over-the-air updates (someday!) has given car companies the excuse to ship new cars before they are finished and debug later. This has become a point of competition. Perhaps MG are pushing this limit further than most?

3. In the case of the MG4, the new platform also involved a switch to completely new suppliers (for MG) e.g. the entertainment system, which mean that improvements through earlier models like the ZS and 5 were not carried over.

What other car brands use the same make and type of technology as MG and don’t have issues?
