MG ZS EV
I am a new electric car driver, having had an Mg Zs Ev for a month now. I don't want this post to come across as a negative, but knowing what you know now about the Mg Zs Ev and electric cars in general, would you have still purchased it?
My opinion is, knowing things like not getting full range in winter, having to install fast charger because granny charger is so slow, the lack of regularly working charging points, ect, in hindsight i probably would have gone hybrid, instead of going headfirst from combustion engine to electric.
Doing your research thoroughly before is crucial (which i wish i did more of) to enjoying electric more at 1st impression.
On the flip side, im hopefull that come the summer when range will increase, and i can get to open the panoramic roof, i will enjoy the electric experience a lot more.

I think you have answered your own question tbh. Doing your own research and understanding the pro's and con's of EV ownership and the model of car your considering (regardless of make) and how it fits your needs is key.

Personally, I am very happy so far albeit in a pandemic lockdown. I am a bit concerned with the BMS problems but hoping that is sorted out.

Research was done up to a point by myself, but real-world driving with real-world electric car issues only becomes apparent after you purchase the car and drive it for a weeks/months.
A showroom test drive will only give you so much information about performance, driveability, battery consumption ect.
But yeah, hoping for a better summer drive

In answer to your first paragraph the answer is definitely no. For me and expect many others an ICE car would have done for the expected time left to continue driving due to age and the date for discontinued production of ICE cars which they will be available more than 10 years after that.

But I'm in now so ................... make do!

ICE Cars are to expensive in long term for my company here in Austria.

The price for the MG was € 15.800.- after tax refund.
€ 29.750 was the asking price including all taxes.

I am driving about 1.200 km per month.
EV total: € 20,- for energy plus € 90,- fully comprehensive insurance = € 110,-

ICE: € 100,- diesel plus € 180,- f.c. insurance = € 280,-
EV is about €2.000,- cheaper per year.

For the EV I will get 100% tax refund for all running costs.

The car is snappy. Diesel cars are slow. I plan ahead, when I am driving more than 200km a
day.

Wow, that is a huge reduction. Asking price in the Netherlands was the same € 29.750. But got an goverment grant of 4000,- and a discount from MG of 4000,-. So payd € 21.750.

It still saves me the same around € 2000,- a year on road taxes, feul and maintenance. I drive around 15.000 km a year and in this winterperiod have not had any problems with the range yet. Although I must admit the range in wintertime is a little less then expected.

But I still would have bought it. It drives like heaven and it's saving me money.

Unless you're some sort of lottery winner, a car, especially a new one, would probably only be 2nd to your house in terms of money/investment. Even without something as important as switching to an ev, it's generally a good idea to get as much research as possible prior to handing over the readies.

My previous car was a Golf, and I researched the hell out of it before I even went to see it. So the "dieselgate" thing, any known faults, service details...you name it, I checked it out first.

Making the switch to ev, even more important. Was already up to speed on battery tech, my hobbies were finally handy for something 🤣. But then had to research everything to do with running the cars in general, then the manufacturers, and finally settle on a vehicle. That's been probably over 6 months of research to know exactly what I was getting into.

Yes, I'm sad, but I really don't like surprises 🤣

We have 14% „Investitionsförderung“ for companies on E-mobility. Because of COVID-19.

€ 29.750,-
- € 3.500,- for my Mercedes c-class

€ 26.250,-
- 20% USt. (Tax)
€ 21.875,-
- €3.000,- Eco-bonus
€18.875,-
- € 3.675,- (14% from € 26.250,-)

Total: € 15.200,- for the car
Plus Homecharger € 600,-

Grant total: € 15.800,-

I suspect the perfect car to suit everyone’s needs has not been (and never will) be made.
I accept there are issues with the MG ZS but for the money I am absolutely delighted.
I sympathise with some of the contributors to this forum who have had quality issues that should be resolved by their dealer but with any mass produced item errors happen.
I try not to get hung up on range, miles per kW or other charging issues and just enjoy my comfortable, well equipped and reasonably priced car for what it is.

Mine is a Motability car and cost me only £299 advance payment.
It is saving me £120 a month on petrol and I don't pay a penny for electricity either.
I still have a diesel four wheel drive for long distances and towing.
I could now get a Vauxhall Corsa E for £99 for the top spec with an official 209 mile range. But I chose the ZS EV because it's an SUV with a big boot. I sometimes use a wheelchair due to my disability and I like how easy the MG is to get in and out of due to the ride height.

The ZS being my first EV and owning Priuses for the last 11 years, I would not buy a hybrid unless you regularly do longer journeys.
I kept my 2016 Prius for the odd longer trip to the coast, but later this year I'll probably trade it for the MG5 and SWMBO will inherit the ZS seeing as her 2006 Prius HV battery has finally given up the ghost at 15 years old. I need to replace one of the cells to sell it for £2500-£3000 as the best we can get with the Triangle of death light on is £500.

Had EV for a year now but only 4000 mls as a result of lockdowns. Furthest journey of 182 miles to airport and back with 13 miles added at airport charger.
Winter weather mileage reduced. Use heated seats rather than heater. Clear windscreen with A/C until clear: drive in ECO mode should still give 120-140 miles even in frost.
Lack of forward planning if no home charger excusable if public chargers available locally although these are either free or about the same cost as petrol for a full charge.
Good vehicle. Hope you won't regret purchase when weather improves.

This is a perfect example of what is referred to as “bleeding edge” .......

Are the things the OP described frustrating? Yes.
should we have all done our homework before purchase? Yes.
Did we? Er, not quite enough - but you never can an you.
Would I do it again? Yes.

Job jobbed 👍

Had my new zs 3 weeks and returned it for a full refund earlier this week having read all the problems associated with it on this forum. Pick up a new kona tomorrow on a 3 year lease 10k a year £301@ month.

I think you can get a false impression of a car from a forum - people like to post and share issues. The ZS is a good car and many have really enjoyed ownership - that has been trouble free so far. Enjoy your new car 🙂
