Front Collision Assist Issue

I had both FCA & LKA off from the day I picked it up on 4/11 as I went on motorway to pick up my daughter after collecting it and had the fright of my life. It stayed off until 14/12 when it went in and had the updates put on with scant details as to what they were and from then on they were on every time I got in the car even if disabled a short journey earlier. I’ve set the ultimatum so will wait to see what MG say about it now. These are supposed to be driver aids for those who want them you should be able to have them disabled if you choose on your own car it‘s ridiculous.

Mine is currently in for updates and fixes. I hope to god things stay off and we're not put in a scary situation otherwise I'll be rejecting it and keeping the lease car.

MG UK are hanging a lot of decent dealers out to dry with their crap Comms and attitude

The release notes on the latest update to LKA specifically state that post update the setting for LKA will revert to default (on) upon restart of car
I had my LKA updated early December and it stays off all the time. I wonder if it's a different update that I got? LKA is certainly much tamer and has options for alert only, lane departure assist and emergency lane keep and the low/moderate/high sensitivity settings. All the settings are retained between restarts. I'm just hoping that the locking recall update doesn't change things!

Interesting. I deal with the service manager and he is very good at explaining detail, we have become very close as I see more of him than I do of my wife. After the last update he showed me the note saying it would now stay on. I’ve told him this needs to change as I could yet reject the car and he’s waiting for an answer.

Tonight driving with my daughter on a 50mph single carriage way the FCA decided to kick in and slam the brakes on the car to an immediate standstill because someone was exiting their car whilst fully parked on the pavement, not in the road at all. This was so aggressive we were both flung forward in our seats and the seatbelt hurt both our stomachs.
Were you able to drive the car immediately afterwards? Someone in a German group reported that the front collision avoiding system braked hard to a standstill and the car wouldn't drive after that.

Hi yes we could but we were very shaken, I was shaking for a good while afterwards.

MG’s response. LKA & FCA should never have been able to be permanently disabled and the update lessened the aggression and corrected this. They also have no plans to allow these settings to be permanently disabled due to NCAP.

I have now requested a return of the car if they will not budge. I pointed out that my husband’s Tesla 3 allows these settings to be permanently disabled and the 69 plate X3 I traded in for the MG4 - I had them disabled on that for a lot less I can assure you! These are both NCAP 5 cars are they not??

Beware any of you who can currently permanently disable as sooner or later if their stance on this does not change you will have an update added to prevent you from doing this. I don’t think they have done a thing on the aggression of either function and that they likely just updated them to stop them being permanently disabled. Had a car ran into the back of me yesterday, I wonder what the position would be now as it literally slammed on like I was about to hit a wall.

Another good point that you make. There are also no public release notes on any of the software updates - which is appallingly bad practice.

NCAP changed the rules (in 2021?) meaning that cars must have these features to achieve a 5-star rating. I'm not sure though whether the rules say that these must always be engaged on start-up to attain 5-stars. (That's why the Zoe now has a 0-star rating, even though it was 5-stars when first introduced).

At least a bromance has blossomed out of the gloom.

I have asked where it states in NCAP that it must default back to on after every start, even though it can then be turned off then by the user - still haven‘t seen this clearly defined anywhere.
Does not make any sense if you can turn it off! If it’s that important (which in my opinion in it’s current state is actually dangerous) - then why can the user turn it off???

Would you consider making a report to the DVSA as a serious safety issue? I think doing so and informing MG would say least get them to take it seriously

HI Steve, I was thinking about this to be honest where to go next as I really believe that if left as it is someone will have an accident and yesterday it could have easily been me. Funnily enough, I had only emailed MG UK about LKA just yesterday morning then went out in the afternoon and had my first encounter with FCA.
My car has:
1. Bulge in chassis tray - known fault awaiting fix
2. Faulty heat sensor - too hot or too cold, known fault awaiting fix
3. Had the locking fault but thankfully it went in for the fix before that triggered
4. Dodgy airbag update alarm triggered - white dust appeared on steering wheel and material poking through, car was in dealer for 3 weeks over Xmas getting further updates (no info made available to me to say how they fixed).
5. FCA triggering an emergency brake on a clear road
6. Car reporting faults in MG app on the following: airbag, tyre pressure, power steering, security alarm, illegal invasion, brake system. Fixed at dealer no info provided to me
7. LKA & FCA changed to presets
8. Inability to warm car cabin when finished charging and still plugged in

I know 7 & 8 are complaints rather than faults but it all adds up to a lot gone wrong with a brand new car that cost over £30k!

Was MG pilot switched in when it did this?
The auto braking warning is very easily triggered in my 4 and the loan 5 that I’m driving, but acknowledging it by touching the brake pedal switches it off and there’s no auto application of the brakes.
My polo and Leaf would often give a warning jab of the brakes, but not even that in the MGs.
Full on braking to a stop is scary and is being blamed for a 5 death car pile up in America recently (Tesla)

FCA was on but it wasn’t in cruise control, the road was clear but it had detected someone getting out of their car whilst fully parked on the pavement not even that close either and went beep beep, emergency stop. I couldn’t have swerved or done anything different because it was all so fast, didn’t even have time to process a thought.

I think I might be at my limit with this car now! This was so aggressive we were both flung forward in our seats and the seatbelt hurt both our stomachs. Along with the LKA this is also a preset which comes back on over and over again & MG do not seem to be addressing this, I’ve already complained to MG UK and my dealer about the update my car had making LKA a preset which cannot be disabled now there is this one to contend with too. If you forget to turn it off it is then a distracting 4 step procedure to disable it on the move and you cannot disable FCA whilst the car is moving! Having had the issues I’ve had with my Trophy, I am now losing patience rapidly and am pretty fed up of being scared witless by my own car!
I noticed that this "feature" seems to happen when there are parked cars and the road bends slightly. Fantastic not! There is one section of road where it happens every time I drive around it. I'm ready on the panel these days. A lovely car spoilt by crappy and dangerous software. Lets hope the programmers of MG4 software never get to work on aircraft safety systems!!!

And for the most part crap communication and after sales service.
You are right the software is a shambles, it's all over the shop, lots of variations of the same faults and some cars that don't seems to have as many/any. How do you fix that🤔

Down to mass production, no two parts exactly the same even microchips have gateway and transistor differences.

You'll also have different microcode versions inside chips for controlling different functions that behave slightly differently to various inputs.

MGs biggest software issue seems to be we'll update a module if it's impacted by a fault else we'll leave it, meaning there's numerous module versions floating about and there's no way they can possibly test every scenario for every module version out there.
