MG ZS EV Connected but not charging

Should it be on or off when I charge?? X
Hi Kate, I believe this is the correct sequence of events for a granny charge :-
  • get out of car and keep it unlocked
  • granny cable already in wall socket but switched off
  • plug charger into port in car
  • switch on socket at wall
  • lock car
  • check through window that charging has started

Ahh good you beat me to it
Pleasant drives 👌

But that will change when your car is updated.

Mine will actually sometimes lock the Type 2 at home, as soon as i plug it in and start the charging process, without locking the doors.

Also it will stop for 1 minute if you unlock, but then it will restart the charging process if you do not unplug it.
How does one get your car updated? I have owned the MG4 ev for two months now, charging was never a problem ( I don’t have a Home charger) until yesterday when the screen said “plugged in but not charging” and I did it the same way I always have at that exact same charging point. It also only yesterday seems to be losing battery power very fast ( 10% in 5km)

Would the sequence be the same for at a pod point charging station at Lidl? ( I don’t have a home one) I’ve always used it now it’s saying “plugged in but not charging” or “failed to communicate with car” suddenly I’m losing charge very fast. ( 10% in only a few kms )

It could be a fault with the Pod-Point charger.

I'm having a charging problem, but it seems to be intermittent. I plug the car (MG ZS EV) in first and then plug in the charger end. In the past, I have sometimes had to unplug the charger end and plug it in again to get the system to work. A few nights ago I plugged in and had to unplug and plug in about a dozen times to get it to start charging. It usually shows 'connected but not charging' until it decides to work. I've just tried it this morning (after switching off smart charge on the app) and it worked perfectly.
Any ideas would be welcome.

With my ZS I used to plug the charger end in first based on the fact that my Pod Point at home works that way as it's already plugged in to the charger, being tethered.

Try cleaning all the contacts with a spray of WD40.

WD40 contact cleaner, not standard WD40 which is a good insulator.

Can you please clarify, is it a Gen1 or Gen 2 ZS EV here ??.
Plug your type2 cable into the wall box first, then when you plug the cable into the charging port of the car, and lock the car with the fob, try applying just slight bit of upward pressure, on the charging gun straight away.
You should hear and feel the cable locking pin enter the charging gun.

Hi all, I had problems with my ZS EV charging at public chargers. Didn’t matter which one, PodPoint, BP Pulse, Chargeplace Scotland. There was always a comms issue between car and charger. I took it to my local dealership, they basically washed their hands of any fault with the car, saying it was a charger issue (what ? every one !?) I eventually solved the problem due to advice from a fellow EV owner and Dr Google ! If you disconnect the 12v battery for at least half an hour, then reconnect, that should do the trick. All good after 4 months👍.

It's a '70 reg., so I guess that's Gen 1.
The car end doesn't seem to be the problem, the plug always locks into the car.
I charged up a couple of nights ago and it behaved perfectly, so I'm beginning to suspect bad contacts.

70 reg with the large pop up black front grill and badge, then it’s a Gen 1 model for sure.
It’s a process of elimination really.
Have you tried using the supplied Granny charger for a few charging sessions ?.
This will help narrow it down to either the wall box / cable etc.
Are you using any mains powered internet extenders ?.
Some members have had problems getting there cars to charge with these items in use.

I'm in Australia. Purchased my new ZS EV about 2 months ago. Attempted to charge at home last week but the charge cable would not lock. Tried a nearby DC fast charger with same issue. I could hear a whiring noise x 4 as it tried to lock but no result. Car said 'connected, not charging' and just stopped. Tried pulling the emergency release cable to see if it was stuck but it was moving freely. Took it to the dealer and after they had tried for 2 days to get working, tell me that it needs a replacement charge port. Unfortunately none available in Australia. Will be 4-6 weeks to get one from China!
They have given me a petrol ZS as a loaner in the meantime but MG Australia really need to improve their spares availability.

After 2 months you just needed to charge it. Can you not takd it back for a full refund as it is not fit for purpose.

@8969Steph,. I know your issue was a year ago and as we have experienced the same problem after only 3 weeks of owning our mg5, wondered what part was replaced and how long did it take to solve?
I still have the same problem. I am currently trying to get the bloody thing to charge yet again
