I keep reading almost every day about how EV's get thrown into a junkyard due to some tiny dent in the battery pack enclosure. The roads are not in very good condition here and in winter snow is constantly pushing against the bottom of car. Can anyone give an assessment on how well the bottom of the battery pack is protected in general?

Not sure, but if you bash yours in, you can always get another one 👍

I think these stories are few in number, and are being amplified by the EV-haters for their own purposes. There are a couple of stories of people who acquired a superficial scratch on the battery case being told their car had to be written off because nobody could tell whether or not the battery inside was damaged, but a lot of it is he said/she said.

There was another story of a shed with EV batteries stacked, for nothing more than a scratched case, but I'm a bit dubious about this. Batteries can be repaired, even if they're genuinely damaged.

I think this is another one in the "EVs are a serious fire risk!" genre. It has occasionally happened, but people are also struck by lightning occasionally.

The issue is once the battery case is compromised (even a small bend) no garage or insurance company will say it's safe to be driven in case it's not.
