Here (Netherlands) Tesla has opened up all fast chargers. And it's easy as hell using the app.

Because Tesla truly believes in electrification and would rather make little to no profit from their charging infrastructure just to go viral.
Other providers, especially independent ones like Fastned and Kempower, struggle to find investment that would allow them to truly compete with Tesla.

my son works as a mechanic. He’s a petrol head. He likes my MG4 but would rather drive a manual petrol car as his first car when he passes his driving test. He had a couple of cheaper EVs as options but chose differently.

I can forgive him because I understand where he comes from having been a petrol head myself.

My ex has a petrol car and wishes to replace with same, even though she borrowed my mg4 and liked it. Thats because the EV she was considering at first was within budget but she didnf like the looks.

For one reason or another they choose ICE.

Combined with speculation from big oil companies who are really waiting for the public to make their mind up and governments who are dragging their feet, the change is slower than it should be.

But we know they are not going to be given a choice soon. And for good reasons

I think there's something to be said right now for passing your test in a manual ICE car. Because if you can do that, and master the gear changes, you can drive anything. If you pass your test in an EV you will only be licensed to drive vehicles without a manual transmission.

Just for info, last time I went to Brighton, the services at the bottom of the M23 (Pease Pottage?) where having a massive install of chargers. Might be useful as a backup?

If I charge at the NEC I don't think I'll get as far as Pease Pottage. It's good to know that it's there though - the range might surprise me if traffic is slow-ish.
