Delay paying £190 car tax on EV until April 2026 (action needed before the end of March 2024)

Right, I've had a couple of pasties so am in fighting mode. Stop swindling the government and the future government out of easy cash. Some of you want bigger wheels and lower profile tyres so presumably want the potholes fixing along with everyone else. If Geoff sells cars gets hold of this, forget Martin Lewis. "EV swindlers worse than Boris" would be the new clarion call. And then there's me, I want my triple lock pension and enough cash in the kitty to pay for it so get your hands in your pockets and pay your dues. Loopholes, you are all worse than those ironic non-dom expats who spout off from afar. Normal service will resume tomorrow when the aniseed has worn off. :D :D :D :D

Listen up mate, we pensioners need all the assistance we can muster. We need to be able to afford little luxuries like nipping out for lunches and coffees and not having to worry about scrimping to finance the cars. We’re the guinea pigs relentlessly driving these EVs hither and occasionally thither in an effort to prove the whole concept of electric vehicular transport
So please, in light of recent journo stories, I spell advisedly when I say “give us a brake”

Hi, in April 2025, EV cars switch from £0 per year car tax to £180. If your car is registered in March, you'll avoid paying it next year. But if registered in April, May or after, you just miss the cut-off and will pay £180 on renewal next year.

This method delays it for a year to March 2026. You pay £0 now, £0 in March 2025 then £180 in March 2026. The £180 payment starts on 1 April 2025.

I went to the "tax your car" government website, and re-taxed mine. You need the V5C registration document 11 digit code, I clicked on "I don't have a tax renewal letter" and agreed "I know I'm taxing it before I have to". But I re-taxed it early, in March instead of June, at a cost of £0.

It took a couple of days to update, but checking on my car's tax status, it has now switched renewal from 1 June 2024 to 1 March 2025, so therefore I avoid paying £180 for a year.

It took 5 mins, and I recommend doing it, there's no reason for everyone whose tax (currently £0) is due after April in 're-taxing' now for £0 and delaying the payment of £180 for a year. But it HAS to be done in March, ie now. The car tax web site warns you you will be paying twice by taxing early - but you just pay £0.00 twice!

I got this off an MG facebook group where they're all doing it, i tried it and it worked. You don't need to SORN the car for a day which some people thought.

Martin
Thanks for this post. I just re taxed my mg4 when it had only been taxed in January. Not sure if this works for my wife's £0 taxed diesel car but her tax was due in a couple of months. I just re taxed hers too, so if this is the case for her car, your post has just saved me £180...cheers

What will be even more interesting is how manufacturers will set their pricing when the VED changes for EV's come in next April. The lowest price Astra EV will be classed in the "expensive" VED bracket as it has a base price over £40,000, with a top spec Corsa only just scraping in under that figure.

Just as well pretty much everything in the MG range, apart from the Cyberster, is not even close to £40,000

Just renewed my car tax (not due until May) early this means that next year my renewal will be March 2025, 1 month before the charge for EV's comes into force.

Top tip I advise everone to get on the case.

DVLA site gives a warning that car is already taxed, but allows you to continue.

As many of us are probably aware we will have to pay VED from April 2025 on our EV's :-

However I came across this interesting YouTube video that may help delay this by up to a year depending when you're car is due for VED. Obviously it only works for owners and not leasers who get it paid anyway by the lease company.

I have just finished watching the video above which raises a question.
The guy explains the step by step process perfectly and when he completes his Application, on his his VW, it comes back to say :- "Application Complete" - Then your car is now valid for 12 months from the 1st March 2024" ( because he has renewed early of course ).
Which if I understand it correctly, this will now enable him to re-tax again, in March just before the £185 duty which is due to start on the 1st April 2025.
When I did my request on Friday, it comes back to say "Application complete" - Then your car is now valid for 12 months from the 1st April" and not the 1st of March ?.
Strangle, my renewal letter arrived in Saturday morning's post !.
As my road tax officially expires on mid night on the 31st March, is it safe to assume I will have therefore dodged the increase then, if I tax again before the 1st April start date ??.
OBTW - My car was first registered on the 14th March 2022 (y) .
