MG4 Software Update Thread

There hasn't been a fault free infotainment software update yet so unless you really can't live with the version you have I wouldn't be too quick to get the latest one installed. It might cure one fault only to replace it with another.
My son has worked in I.T, now works for a games company. He said it has often been known for them to put out a software update for a game for it to fix one problem, only to create another. Sometimes it’s made the problem the update was made for worse.

Tbh I don’t even know what version of the update I have. The day after we signed the paperwork for the car the dealer text me a 20 minute video of him in the car, running through all the screen options etc

The day I picked it up, he did say to me if you watched the video, you might notice the heater screen is different now to what he showed in the video ( it was ) but I’ve had no real issues

Now it won’t be for a while but he said I’ll get a text/email about a month before it’s due to go in for its first check/service so I presume any updates will be done then

Hopefully everyone with these issues gets it sorted ASAP 🤞

All software development be like this, no exceptions:-

I'm not a developer myself but my understanding is that most development teams do something called regression testing where they check all parts of the system after the new code has been applied. Parts that the new code doesn't touch. While it is possible for new bugs to be introduced, this process should help identify them and limit them. I wonder if MG are doing such a thing or if they are, are they doing it properly

Well, many of the 'queries' about 'bugs' are often user error anyway. MG will of course be performing regression testin, unit & system testing but no doublt this will actually be performed by a 3rd party company in China where the software development, maintenance and production releases are handled.

The problem is regression testing for MG will be a Herculean task as they do not maintain a "standard" platform with known versions. Modules are updated ad-hoc and every car seems to be running different versions of software somewhere. It would be impossible to regression test against all those possible combinations.

That is why software companies like Microsoft, Apple, Google etc learned long ago you push updates out to the users to make sure they are all on "standard" configurations. In business, if you phone HP/Dell etc for support with an issue on their computers the first thing they ask is what versions you are running, and the standard response if you are on old versions is words to the effect "upgrade to the latest versions and if you still have the problem call back".

The issue is that the more people that use the software (Us!), the more "edge cases" are found.
An edge case is often simply something the developer didn't think might ever happen.

I worked on embedded software and there the story is a little more complicated. But in general I agree.
I think many of the problems with the software update of the MG4 might be related to the process that an operator needs to follow in order to update the different modules.
The bug might be with the actual updater not the software per se.

With the variety of modules, software versions and markets, I doubt it would be practical for MG to regression test all the options.

They need to improve the update system: it is costing them and garages a fortune and annoying owners.

If they can get automatic updates working with the MG4, which is now maturing, it proves the concept for future models.

I'm sure there's been plenty of these comments but...
Another dealership visit and yet another "skip" on doing infotainment updates.

They really don't bother unless you complain, do they. I have rang back up listing the problems so the tech can write up a booking that has enough detail for a warranty claim.

All this and I asked for it specifically pre-service. Booked in, but 3 weeks away.
Is R46 still the latest for 22 Trophy?

Folks, no doubt it has been posted on here, I’ve probably read it & forgot 🤔

How do you check what software version you have?

I picked my car up in January, I’d presume it would have been updated with the latest version available at the time? Even if I have an older version, I’m happy to carry on with it until the car goes in for its first check up/service … “If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it” … I’d just be interested to know.
