Back after a week holiday, got in car it reads -40°C I think nothing of it and drive off. Press the heating on/off button nothing. Go into A/c panel, everything is non responsive and heater is set to low. Everything is dead. Done the home screen reset, driven a few miles to see if that corrected. Nothing. Any ideas. The car is 6 months old!

When you say the home screen reset I assume you mean pressing the home button for 10 seconds, approx. Have you tried the 'Factory Reset' option?

Oh, what is factory reset. Haven’t tried that….

How do you do a “factory reset”?

We had the climate control on our motorhome refuse to cool when it was 35°C outside - but the dashboard outside temperature read - 20. After checking the ac compressor clutch fuses, etc, etc I twigged that the climate control system used the outside temperature sensor as an offset. It transpired that the outside temperature sensor had failed and once replaced it all started working OK.
Maybe worth checking for where the temperature sensor is on the MG and checking the wiring / plugs to it.

If you want to look the outside sensor is in the top left corner of the front grill. A couple of owners have had this problem and it needed a trip to the dealers for further investigation before it was approved for replacement by MG.

The Factory Reset option is under Settings/System. Note, I have not done this myself and the manual warns to use with caution. A Poster on the MG HS/Hybrid forum reported using it to cure a problem but it resulted in the reporting Fahrenheit rather than Celsius. It needed a dealer software fix to correct. That may not be true for the MG4.

It is probably better to go for the 'disconnect 12v battery' option first as no side effects have been reported with that if you follow the procedure to set the steering and windows.

I've recently had the outside temperature sensor replaced.

The full drama is here if you're interested.....

I wonder what temperature it defaults to if you unplug it or join the wires together ?

If you know for certain it's just a temperature dependent resistor you could try some fixed resistors and choose your temperature.

If it's something else such as a canbus device, it would still just be an error and I'd be worried about damaging something expensive.
