battery range

An electric vehicle battery (EVB, also known as a traction battery) is a rechargeable battery used to power the electric motors of a battery electric vehicle (BEV) or hybrid electric vehicle (HEV).
Electric vehicle batteries differ from starting, lighting, and ignition (SLI) batteries, as they are typically lithium-ion batteries that are designed for high power-to-weight ratio and energy density. Smaller, lighter batteries are desirable because they reduce the weight of the vehicle and therefore improve its performance. Compared to liquid fuels, most current battery technologies have much lower specific energy, and this often impacts the maximum range of all-electric vehicles. Unlike earlier battery chemistries, notably nickel-cadmium, lithium-ion batteries can be discharged and recharged daily and at any state of charge. Other types of rechargeable batteries used in electric vehicles include lead–acid, nickel-cadmium, nickel–metal hydride, and others. The battery makes up a significant portion of the cost and environmental impact of an electric vehicle. Growth in the industry has generated interest in securing ethical battery supply chains, which presents many challenges and has become an important geopolitical issue. As of December 2019, the cost of electric vehicle batteries has fallen 87% since 2010 on a per kilowatt-hour basis. As of 2018, vehicles with over 250 mi (400 km) of all-electric range, such as the Tesla Model S, are available. The price of electricity to run an electric vehicle is a small fraction of the cost of fuel for equivalent internal combustion engines, reflecting higher energy efficiency.

    Mad energy consumption

Hi everybody, I would like to hear your opinion about the exaggerated energy consumption I am experimenting since last few months. I've driven a second hand 2023 standard edition MG4 since last june: during the last summer the battery autonomy was very similar to the declared one (more than 300...

    Winter range...

I appreciate this has probably been discussed previously but, I've just charged our MG4 Trophy overnight to 80%. The app is telling me it has 127 miles of range. I knew winter temperatures would have an impact on the range but that is quite an alarming drop off to the usual expected miles available.

I’ve previously had 80% at around 220 consistently. This seems very low. Charged in garage. Not freezing yet

    Range concerns on S5

Hi everyone..... Had my S5 over a month and generally very pleased with it so far. However, I am a little concerned over the range I'm getting. I know it's the wrong time of year to be expecting big range numbers near to what the manufacturer claims, but this is worse than my previous MG4...

    Miles left

I am getting quite confused. I have a 73 plate ZS EV standard range. Each time I charge it up fully on my Zappi home charger I end up with different estimates of remaning miles. It varies from somewhere in the 160s to over 190. Is this normal?

    Range - 80%

Only been using the car a few days and I have a question about range. Charged to 80% last night and the MG app is showing the range is 175 miles. I have the Trophy so I would expect it to be well into the 200 mile plus range. Do I have an issue? New to EV cars. We did a long motorway ride of...

    Real world range

Hi could you guys that have received your IM6 please give a real world idea of what to expect for the long range and the performance models.

    Full charge range

I have had my S5 for a month and understood the full charge range to be 288 miles on the Trophy extended range variant, I am getting varying full charge ranges, today 280 miles, previous charge 294 miles other charges as low as 274, is anyone else getting similar?

Not proud of it, but hit 0% battery range a mile from home and made it back!!!!

I have the short range MG ZS EV and I embarked on a journey of 19 miles last night with double the battery range needed to drive there and back. A late night motorway closure added a small amount to the journey, but I was a mile from home, creeping about at under 30mph, chuckling to myself that...

    Hello

Hello everyone I thought I would introduce myself after jumping onto the back of someone else's question. I have been lurking for a month or so and I have picked up my ZS on Friday. I have been researching the car for months and although there are many EV's on the market I kept coming back...

Range decrease due to cold weather [merged thread]

Hi all. Ive had my Mg4 long range trophy for 3 months, its advertised at 281 miles withnits 64kw battery. When fully charged it used to show 276 miles of range, the last few charges it is only showing around 196 to 210 miles. What has gone wrong?, its only 3 months old?, could it be an issue...

400 Mile round trip to Poole (MG4 SR)

Just come back from a 5 day break from Nr Peterborough to Poole in Dorset. All was smooth and the hotel (Holiday Inn had some chargers). Made the mistake of connecting to the 7,5 kW and then I noticed it has an automatic extra £10 charge if stay longer than 90 minutes - this was in quite small...

    what's the lowest % battery you've gone to on a trip ?

went down to 7% on trip last night, at 8% the GOM gave up and just said -- has anyone got down to last few % points and kept going ? just interested if the % left is accurate and hence ok to go down to 1 or 2% ?

Oddly reduced range all of a sudden?

Hi guys, Quick question! I’ve got a 2019 ZS EV Exclusive 44kwh. Only had it a couple of months, but I’m really enjoying it. I’ve been getting almost bang on the stated 160 mile range. Combination of charging at home (with the granny charger) and at rapid chargers. Today, I’m charging it...

(quite) long trip this weekend - any advice/guidance?

Traveling a total of 280 miles (140 each way) on Saturday. Trophy here. I am very nervous about being able to do this on one charge (in fact I'm not going to try it - even assuming 100% state of charge to start!) I can get to my destination and about 1/2 way back in 200 miles where there is...

Running out of (HV) battery in an EV

I expect it has happened. I particularly expect it might have happened in the days when EVs had a lot less range than modern cars, and when chargers were fewer and further between. But now? EV drivers don't habitually drive on until they're running on fumes. Most people leave enough wiggle-room...

    Battery Range > 300miles 4.6m/kwH - 481m round trip

481 miles, 4.6 miles per kwh. Cruise control speed set at 60mph. Best bits: It got me there and back - as expected. Other people at the chargers saved my life, told me how to get the charger to work and more importantly told me that to stop the charger you needed to reuse your card (makes sense...
