tyre pressure

Cold inflation pressure is the inflation pressure of tires before a car is driven and the tires (tyres) warmed up. Recommended cold inflation pressure is displayed on the owner's manual and on the placard (or sticker) attached to the vehicle door edge, pillar, glovebox door or fuel filler flap. Most passenger cars are recommended to have a tire pressure of 30 to 35 pounds per square inch when not warmed by driving. 40% of passenger cars have at least one tire under-inflated by 6 psi or more. Drivers are encouraged to make sure their tires are adequately inflated, as under inflated tires can greatly reduce fuel economy, increase emissions, cause increased wear on the edges of the tread surface, and can lead to overheating and premature failure of the tire. Excessive pressure, on the other hand, will lead to impact-breaks, decreased braking performance, and cause increased wear on the center part of the tread surface.
Tire pressure is commonly measured in psi in the imperial and US customary systems, bar, which is deprecated but accepted for use with SI or the kilopascal (kPa), which is an SI unit.
Ambient temperature affects the cold tire pressure. Cold tire absolute pressure (gauge pressure plus atmospheric pressure) varies directly with the absolute temperature, measured in kelvin.
From physics, the ideal gas law states that PV = nRT, where P is absolute pressure, T is absolute temperature, V is the volume (assumed to be relatively constant in the case of a tire), and nR is constant for a given number of molecules of gas. To understand this, assume the tire was filled when it was 300 kelvin (approximately 27 degrees Celsius or 80 degrees Fahrenheit). If the temperature varies 10% (i.e., by 30 kelvins [also 30 degrees Celsius or 54 degrees Fahrenheit]), the pressure varies 10%. So if the tire was filled at 80 °F to 32 psi (or 47 psi absolute when we add atmospheric pressure), the change would be 4.7 psi for this 30 Celsius degree change, or 0.16 psi per Celsius degree or 0.1 psi per Fahrenheit degree or 1 psi for every 10 Fahrenheit degrees. Using SI units, that would be 1.1 kPa/K.
Hence, for a tire filled to 32 psi, the approximation usually made is that within the range of normal atmospheric temperatures and pressures:
Tire pressure increases 1 psi for each 10 Fahrenheit degree increase in temperature, or conversely decreases 1 psi for each 10 Fahrenheit degree decrease in temperature and
in SI units, tire pressure increases 1.1 kPa for each 1 Celsius degree increase in temperature, or conversely decreases 1.1 kPa for each 1 Celsius degree decrease in temperature. For tires that need inflation greater than 32 psi it might be easier to use a Rule of Thumb of 2% pressure change for a change of 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
From the table below, one can see that these are only approximations:

Tyre pressure: how high can you go?

How high can you inflate the tyres above the recommended 2.6 bar without triggering an alarm? Or can you set a higher pressure, say 2.8 bar, and zero it out so the car now treats that as its nominal value?

    Tyre pressure sensors issue

My trophy connect zs has recently been telling me my tyres are on 1.9 I check at the garage and tyre pressure is fine - anyone rise had this issue ? Any fix for it rather than having to go to garage it’s about 35 min drive away so not convenient to a dealer ?

    Tyre slime for flat

My left rear tyre is flat as a pancake. I got the notification as I turned for home about low tyre pressure, then as I parked I heard and watched it go flat. I tried to jack up the car with my Mazda 3 jack...lmao! I need hulk to get that done. So, next fix is to slime the tyre and get to...

Tyre pressure display in kpa (kilopascals) not Bar

When I collected the car, the tyre pressure monitor showed readings in kpa. Everywhere in documentation etc., Bar readings are shown and quoted. I can so far see/find nowhere in settings or manually switching to change this 'annoyance'. I am aware that it is only a question of moving two decimal...

    Alarms . key and Tyre

Hi, I have an alarm for tyre pressure of front left. I havent seen this before, can I just pump up the tyre myself and it resets or do I have to goto a dealer ? Where do I find what tyre pressure should be ? Second alarm is for the key. The car key stopped working once for a few mins but...

Auto tyre pressure reading MG ZS: does it sometimes go wonky?

My 22 plate ZS EV is showing a tyre with lower pressure than there should be (error icon / flashing yellow on affected wheel), yet when I pumped it up it not only still shows the error but is 0.1 bar lower than before. Anyone else experienced this?

    Tyre pressure sensor

Advice appreciated. All four tyres showed up as 'low tyre pressure' during a cold snap we had a couple of weeks ago (-4 or so). I didn't really need to use the car during this period so left it until we got back to 0 to 5 degrees (or thereabout) and then pumped them back up to the recommended...

My car doesn't like the cold.

My pre FL doesn't like the cold. The tyre pressure sensors keep giving false low pressure warnings even when the display shows the tyre at the same pressure as the rest. I have confirmed by manually checking the pressures. I keep getting warnings relating to the camera and then the lane...

    Low pressure tyre warning

Last night on my way home I suddenly got a low pressure tyre warning. When I called up the tyre pressure screen all the tyres were at 2.4 or 2.5 BAR, including the one that is supposedly low. When I scanned the car with the app this morning, same thing. Low pressure warning but all tyres...

    Tyre pressure warning light

I've just had my two front tyres replaced at a tyre specialist garage (i.e. non MG). I asked while they were fitting them if the TPMS needed resetting; they said it should automatically reset. On the way home, I had the tyre pressure fault warning notification and dashboard light come on...

    TPMS and cr@p valve access

Hello, Driving home last night I had a low tyre pressure warning light come on (was at 2.2 bar (32psi)). Got home and left the car for an hour to cool before refilling the tyres (37psi), however the tyre still reported 2.2 bar in both the instrument panel and the app. Powered off and on again...

    Resetting a tyre pressure warning

The tyre pressure warning light came on today. Not sure which tyre it's referring to. Let the tyres cool and checked and all seemed to be fine. Is there any way to reset so that the warning light goes off? Thanks all

Why don't we see MG hub caps on the side of the road

I suspect that the hub caps on the ZS EV are tamper proof because I could not get mine off easily. The car had warned me that my tyre pressure was low, 2.4 bah , so I had dropped into the servo and approached my hub cap and found that I couldn't get the tyre inflator end onto my nozzles, so...

    MG ZS EV Tyre Pressure

Hello, I have only had my car since the end of November. I have topped up the tyre pressures a couple of weeks ago to help with efficiency. I now have a warning at the rear left, 2.3 rather than 2.8 bar. There does not seem to be any form of puncture. Any ideas as to a potential issue? Or is...

    Tyre Pressure & TPMS

Just a point from my lesson learnt. When we got our 5LR a year ago the tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) showed the tyres at 2.0 bar. After coming back from its first service it was still 2.0 bar. So I've always assumed 2.0 bar was correct until I read the pressure figures inside the...
