40 miles of range 'lost'

From early November, when we picked up our S5, up to Christmas, we had a predicted range of approx 285 miles for SoC 100% (220 miles for SoC of 80%).

Since Christmas, our range has dropped to approx 242 miles at !00% SoC (195 miles at 80% SoC).

So I thought "Time to give it a balancing charge" so set charging limit in car to 100% and let it charge. But when it reached 100% it stopped, and message on charger & Octopus said something to the effect that the car had prevented further charging.

So it looks like the car doesn't think its batteries need balancing, ...or I'm missing something about how to do this.

What's significant about Christmas? ...apart from the obvious!

Well, that's the only time we have charged the car from a public d.c. charger.

Also remember that our car was not 'Harry Spankers'. It was bought as an ex-demo, but probably doubled as the Sales Managers company car, so had already covered around 2,700 miles and had therefore obviously been charged quite a few times.

We may charge again to 100% in a few days to see if this will make a difference, but as we are soon off on holiday, we have little time now to experiment before we return.

My understanding (& remember I'm a newbie) is that the predicted range is a weighted value, where the effect of previous conditions are 'watered down' over just a few hundred miles.

Also, there was no apparent drop for the 6 weeks leading up to Christmas, so things looked very stable.

I noticed this apparent range reduction when we repeated the same trip a few weeks after Christmas, that we had previously covered a few weeks before Christmas; my co-pilot (not the MG one) gave me a bit of a mauling because we were now running low on SoC from the initial 80% for both trips.

Our miles/kWh figures seem pretty good most of the time; often in the range 3.5 - 4.1.

But I will reset any trips you think necessary, when the boss brings the car back!

Do you have actual measurables, or just memory? Sunny doesn't often equate to warm in Winter. Different part of the country to you, but here, it has been significantly colder in Jan, especially first half of Jan, compared to before Xmas.

Does the boss like it warm in the car ? I rarely have the heating on in my MG 5 and I live in Gosport , but it has been wet n windy down here

Resetting all trips and the consumption (in battery section) will give show more mileage. I did a balance charge at the weekend and before resetting everything was showing 260ish range, after reset and switching to eco it was showing 298 on the GOM (guess o meter).

I get that people get a bit hung up on this but having owned several EVs now over a number of years, this is just winter it will go back up in the warmer weather.
resetting can give a very false figure that very quickly drops again due to weather, heating etc

Remember, if you chose to reset, or NOT to reset your trips, then the figure quoted by the car is ONLY a prediction, or at best a pure guess, hence the term GOM !.
This figure is arrived at by using previous historical data stored by the car, based on MANY factors like driving style, HVAC use etc etc.
The car is very clever, but not clever enough to know just how the car will start to be driven on the very NEXT journey.
But does have the ability to recalculate / review its long term prediction on the move, based on that latest current journey.
Unless I misunderstood The OP's question his concern was aimed at why his car is not predicting the same range now, when fully charged to 100% like it it did prior to Christmas.
Normally in these type of situations, the person is concerned that he / she may have an issue with their traction battery ( i.e. do I have battery degradation ).
To dismiss any fears of this, I suggested a trip reset.
Then the car has NO historical data to base its prediction, so therefore should display the WLTP figure advertised for the car when new.
Which I believe is 288 miles.
IF there is a huge difference in this figure, then battery degradation has to be suspected.
This is a basic way of monitoring battery degradation and can be conducted over the life of the car.
That's if you are interested of course .

Agree. Whichever way you want to look at it. It's Winter. Range will drop, sometimes quite a bit, if it's really cold. Simple's.
