Are rear seat backs removable?

I needed to drop the rear seats yesterday for the first time and noticed the bracket in which the backs pivot had a vertical slot. This purpose of this is probably for ease of assembly at the factory but I'm wondering if it would also allow the seat backs to be removed to create a flat floor if required. The only snag I can see is what happens to the centre belt?
