Software updates were a standard part of the MG service till about late September 2025. My MG4 was booked for its first 40,000 km service somewhere around that time and the schedule specified "All Software Updates". When it actually went in some time in October, MG had told all its dealers that Software Updates were no longer part of the standard service and so they were not done.

I complained and stated that when booked they were included and that was when the service contract was agreed. The Dealer reluctantly agreed & they were done, but I had to take the car back in..

Now if you want an update you need to complain that LKA etc is dangerous or something and they will usually do it as a warranty job. Put it all in writing.

I am happy with how the car software operates now. I always kept LKA on anyway and just learned to drive more accurately. Now I just get beeps when I stray next to the white line and the odd subtle steering wheel tug. Before it could be quite disconcerting though I had got used to it. Some comments like "My car is trying to kill me" were well over the top in my opinion.

There are quite a few other minor changes which are good but were not on my list of issues.

It is still the best drivers car I have ever owned. It really shines on a twisting hilly country road. Booting out of corners is really fun. LKA etc is always off on drives like that though.

Having previously lived in the UK, I understand how their country roads upset the LKA. Given the compactness of the country, there are a lot of middle income people living outside of the towns and cities where they work. Hence a lot of UK EV early adopters (which make up a large proportion of this forum) are using country roads and have LKA issues. While back in Oz we are much more urbanised and our country roads are wider. Having said that our other car, now in the hands of our son, is a Kia Cerato with LKA and it has in the past forced me into potholes on country roles, while trying to drive around them.

I got my first MG4 real cheap, seems it sent the unsuspecting driver into a white guide post hard enough to leave a core sample in the threaded tow hook hole behind the front bumper ..... must have been running late for church or something
I made sure they had the updated software installed before we collected the car, made them put it in writing that if the lane keep assist hadn't been updated and caused my wife to crash the car on the way home, the sales manager and salesman would be personally liable ..... got a few strange looks until I showed them photos of the car and their sticker on the window ..... frantic phone calls and trips to the car to check screens, before they were willing to sign away their houses

Form sent off, final payment made. All I have left to do is get two of the wheels refurbed (they are just outside the 50mm limit) and that's it, my tenure as an MG owner will come to an end.

When I ordered this car back in 2022, I used the term "bought" even though it was on PCP as I intended to keep it. I was excited to get it. However, its going back early. Its a real shame that it has come to this, but the constant failures, dealers "fixing" things, has rather taken the shine off. 😞

Pretty much the same as the wife's experience, glad hers is a company car

As I am getting close to one year of ownership, I want to give my thoughts on the car. To put it in a nut shell, I am very happy with the car and absolutely don’t regret buying it and I still would get one today.

Issues:
  • Broken tpms sensor (happened likely while changing to all season tires, so not really the cars fault)
  • Broken heater in the winter (terrible situation to be in, especially if your dealer doesn’t know anything about this car and can’t find the error even if it throws a DTC) Full story see here: Heating not working | MG4 EV (2022 to 2025) Forum
All issues where fixed under warranty.

Likes:
  • 360 Cam (Very handy)
  • Front LED Lights (very bright with a good side spread)
  • Acc (very nice as I live in an area with a lot of traffic) - The update improved it a lot
  • Overall feel and handling (feels snappy and agile)
  • Range is enough for what I drive and the charging speed is fast enough
  • Looks of the car: Its unique, not your typical EV and yet sporty
  • Charge Port (I know it sounds weird but I like the way it looks with the 4 led sections)
  • Construction: Taking the interior apart is easy and very little things seem to be coded (unlike the never German cars). You can rip quad locks from the Computer and the car will still drive with no errors..)
  • Real Buttons on the steering wheel (Thank you MG for not giving us this touch slide trash)
  • Form and feel of the steering wheel (I think it has the perfect size and the shape is cool). The fake leather feels nice.
  • No subscriptions like in the ID series with heated seats and what not

Dislikes:
  • Service sucks (tried 4 dealers and 3 were total crap). One was overpriced, the other just dump (didn’t know the difference between left and right), the other one simply denied helping me. No 4 was very good and helpful (sadly located 250km away from me)
  • Fog in the rear lights drives me nuts
  • The piano applications: Some are more annoying than others like the ones at the steering wheel or the window switches
  • Auto dimming of the infotainment screen not really working well and the IPK is a bit to bright for my likings at night
  • Light Switch design (who had the idea that when I want to switch from automatic to manual beams to put the off position between these two?)

Neutral:
  • Software is ok. I don’t know what some people expect but this is not a Tesla. For me it’s fine except for some smaller bugs but I can live with that.
  • Quality: Just a solid build car nothing outstandingly crazy - some parts are of better quality (good panel gaps and overall feel of the plastics is good) and some of less good quality (like seat leather)
  • Some assistants are good (acc) others are less good (rear ending assist always triggers in city traffic - therefor I turned it off) others are ok (blind spot assist)
  • App is ok if it can connect to the car

Overall I traveled 11k kms with the car and am looking forward for the next year of ownership. I think the MG4 is great value for money and it has its faults, but for me the positives make up for them. I thought abut getting an ID3 as well but I didn’t because of the subscriptions, the touch slider controls, boring looks and higher price. I think MG absolutely nailed it with this car in terms of the overall package for the price. I would highly recommend this car to anyone getting into EVs on a budget looking for a fun daily driver.
