Morning all!

I'm Mark, and I'm a new member here. I'm waiting on the delivery of my MG4 here in Perth (Western Australia), Volcano Orange. Essence 64 (Trophy 64) on lease, replacing an MG 6, which I've been leasing since 2018. I've also owned a 2002 MG TF 135 for ten years now.

So much info on here, I'm looking forward to sharing and contributing over time.

However, I have a question... In October, the three WA MG clubs have the SafetyFast run and cars are provided with Rally Plates to attach to the front. Now I can see that fitting it to the top edge of the number plate will interfere with the front camera and may not work anyway due to the shape of the nose. So, is there any function that would be compromised by fixing it to the bottom edge?

Thanks,

Mark

Thanks Salty, looking forward to being part of things :)

You would probably be better off contacting the club for this information.

Good luck with the rally!
Thanks Caramaddy, I have tried there and may get some info but although our local clubs have a few members with MG4's they don't appear to be active at all.

Hi @DocMark, welcome to MGEVs, I don't know what your Rally Plates look like, but couldn't you just take the regular number plate off, and screw the Rally Plate on, it would only take a minute, and it would look much better, as well as being more secure?

I guess depending on the size of your rally plate, it may slightly inhibit the cooling airflow (if your car decides to open the front flaps for cooling). Could you fix it to the left or right of the rego plate?

Congrats on an amazing colour by the way ;)

Thanks Clive, really enjoying the forum. Unfortunately can't use the rally plate to replace or obscure the license plate as we're on public roads. Actually a fun run, not a full blown rally, but thanks

Hi Reintje,

Thanks for that, I was orange or red and the dealership only has orange Essence 64s left now.

That was the main issue I was thinking of. I may try to fix to the side with a metal strip for rigidity.

Can you put a couple of magnetic strips on the back and attach it to the front edge of the bonnet?

Hi Ian,

That's a good thought. I can try that with a similar piece of plastic and see if it stays in place at highway speed.

There was the option of a stick-on plate, but this is all happening well after the cutoff date for ordering them. 🙄

You'll have to put strips all around the edge so the wind can't get underneath.

Depending on the size of it and the size of Australian plates, it might interfere with the front radar which is below the front number plate. This would stop the cruise control and emergency braking from working, but it should still be possible to drive ok.

Nice rally, guess I'll miss out.
It runs every October and is open to non club members as well as members of the three WA clubs, always great fun.

Okay, not systems I'd like to have non-functioning - looks like on the bonnet it is.

Isn’t the radar module next to the camera? Or is that just the radar control box?

That's just other electronic gubbins up near the front (windscreen) camera unit. The actual radar device itself is (supposed to be) where @MG Clive mentions.
Yeah I thought that YouTube video with the dude dropping his front bumper showed a module nearer the front facing camera in the bumper, but all I know is that’s where some cable plugged in to, I don’t know if that is also the actual radar component. And it is hard to see for sure anyway in that video

Ah, right. We're talking about different cameras ... my SE SR (Excite 51) doesn't have any camera units, except for the triangle section on the windscreen. (This camera, together with the radar unit, is used for ACC/TJA operation, plus some other systems like LKA, AEB etc.)
