Brakes not breaks

I thought both were correct but the single L more common in US english and the double in english english.

I have read documents from both sources with each spelling so guessed it was interchangeable. Happy to bow to someone more knowledgeable, or is that knowledgeablle? :)
Problem is many word processors and forums default to US English spell check, notably the use of Z instead of S, (as in criticising comes up as an error and suggests criticizing).
This can lead to thinking the US spelling is correct.
