Breather pipe

Hi Again Folks,
Perhaps and it's only a thought, Southern Hemisphere Black pipe, Northern Hemisphere Gold Pipe.??
As most transmission oil are O.E.P. oils (Oil extreme Pressure) it would make sense to have a more sensitive pressure relief valve in the hotter climates. Or it could be M.G. just cutting corners and saving a few pence?.
You are misunderstanding what the word "pressure" is referring to.
An "extreme pressure" oil relates to the pressure the oil is under whilst lubricating the meshing gear surfaces. This has nothing to do with air pressure inside a gearbox which will increase with temperature as the air expands. If left unchecked, this pressure can blow out the drive shaft oil seals so it is common to vent it via a breather.

Given what you have just said, which sounds reasonable, on closer inspection the black pipe has an opening for perhaps pressure release. But, the gold post does not seem to have an opening, unless it is designed to give way when excessive pressure exists. Gold post people might be able to confirm.

Maybe we should’ve asked on the podcast earlier if the new model has this pipe on it.....

I had a little chuckle at that one too. (y) :sneaky: :giggle:

Feeling by pressing on the top of the gold post, it is either recessed or it is soft, so there could be some sort of venting in it.
