Charging at 7.05kW

Our EVSE charging rate has been hovering at 7.30 to 7.34 while charging during this afternoon's Free Electricity session.
Curious, how much of that is actually going into the battery (wall box vs iSmart value)?

You are not alone!

Is that an Anderson charger. Looks cool
It's a Hypervolt :)
Did an installation thread here:

One of the worst things about EVs are all this digital information to a high degree of precision.

Whether its mi/kWh or battery charge % or kW charging speed, we end up with numbers, numbers, numbers which breeds in some people an unwarranted obsession over the details.

If I had a pound for every person who was spooked by why their numbers are a bit different to the next person....

I only need to know:
  • Is my battery empty, a quarter, half, 3/4 or full?
  • Is my efficiency excellent, good, average, poor or terrible?
  • Rather than a kW charge rate (academic at best) or a time to 100% charged (who charges to 100%?), please just tell me "X minutes to 80%" instead.

I'd be happy for the obsessives to have a 10 decimal-point display option, I'm not seeking to limit choice here, but please let me pick the user-friendly rough approximation UI!

I was pretty obsessive about it when I first started driving EV but time cures all ills as they say :) Once you are comfortable with the car and know what it can/cannot do you begin to trust it and just drive.

I wasn't obsessive, just vary curious, once I knew what's going on I lost a lot of my interest.
Same with the PV/battery system.
I'm not good with numbers any more, don't remember them long enough for them to be meaningful.

Now I just need to know how far we'll be going in the next week or so, to make sure there's enough ommph in the battery, and when's the best time to charge.

What I used to love about the old MG5 was the ease of working out the range. With a ~50kWh battery and a percentage readout on the dash it was simple to work out how far I could go at any point. Helped that my first few years working were in retail before electronic tills came in and you were forced to add up and subtract in your head.

Yeah it is easy to do in your head with a 50kWh battery. Just half/double and you can switch from percentage to kWh.

25kWh = 50% of battery and so on.

Good evening, and apologies for the late hour....!!!
I'm charging the S5 overnight....just checked the Ohme App and it's telling me it's charging at 7.03kW.....unheard of!!!!
My MG4 never charged higher than at 6.95kW.

Is this normal??? I have an Ohme Home Pro charger, and the S5 is specified as the car being charged. I removed the MG4 from the list.

Sorry if it's a dumb question, but i read somewhere not to expect more than 6.95kW from a 7kW charger......
All EVSE equipment operate between 6-7.2kW
This is the maximum you will see on wall boxes
11 and 22kW are for 3 phase supplies
But not many domestic installations have 3phase in the UK
Most supplies are single phase and are rated between 60 to 100amp on the incomer side.
Alot of the smart EVSE equipment have the ability to play around with the power delivery of the load.
7.2kW pulls a constant 32A so we install 40amp double pole RCD
Protective devices upstream as for safety requirements on BS7671

Having given the car a decent run, I charged successfully to 100% overnight. I added an extra couple of percent charge request to ensure it went past the 99% mark and it actually charged the percentage amount it actually needed.

Range has gone right down to 214 miles at 100%......

Combination of factors.....
Colder weather, and the car's average mi/kWh took a thumping over the weekend. 110 mile trip with three adults, three luggage bags, one cello and one stand. That weight combined with 10⁰C, rain, wet roads and night time returned me 2.8-2.9 mi/kWh.

I don't usually reset the system to inflate range prediction, but in this instance, I may have to in order to generate slightly more realistic range.

Or is 214 miles more realistic now at this time of year? MG4's lowest 'tankful' was around 220 miles in the cold at 100%....

I'm pretty certain the weight affected my range over the weekend....charged publicly to 83%.....185 miles predicted for the 110 mile journey , and was left with 59 miles at 32% charge. Motorway driving at mostly 65mph. Last 20 miles at 70mph made little difference to consumption.

The weather was not in your favour for sure.
Now is a good time to be trailing it though, because if it meets your expectations in the winter months, then in the spring / summer you will be extremely happy !.
As a bit of a yard stick, resetting the trips and charging to 80% predicts over 200 miles of range.

I normally charge to 80%, but i just wanted to ensure a ful charge was possible, having missed out first time.

I rarely did a trip reset on my MG4, but will do so today just to restore data from more usual use.

Thank you for the 80% yardstick....will see how it goes.
