Hi all can someone please help with a charging question. I do not drive many miles therefore I never charge beyond 80% should I carry on as is or charge to 100% now and then to enable a balance cycle

I'd charge to 100% every 3 months or so.

I think the manual/guidance for the NMC cars is to charge to 100% and leave it to balance (using an AC charge point) at least every 3 months, and then every 6 months to do a calibration charge, again using an AC charge point. (i.e. let the SoC get to <10% then leave the car for a couple of hours. Then charge to 100% and leave it to balance, all in one go).

I'd only bother charging to 100% if you could use up some of the charge (at least 5%) within a few hours of it finishing charging. If you're going to be sitting at high 90's for a week or so, then i'd personally not bother at all with this recommendation, and certainly never do it every 3 months.

As has already been said, don't recharge until you reach home with battery between the 10% and 5% remaining, put it on charge the day before you plan to use it next and leaving charging all day and night and only unplug the next day before you are ready to leave to give it plenty of time to fully charge and balance.
Repeat the process before the next charge, use it until there is between 5% and 10% remaining, then recharge the day before you need to use it, again, leaving it charging and balancing until you are ready to drive ....
The reason for repeating the process is to get the battery closer to full capacity charged and fully balanced

I would simply add that the perceived wisdom seems to be that a balancing charge should be in one ‘go’. I don’t get this with my tariff (Octopus IOG), as Octopus stop-go their intelligent charging, so I opt out of Octopus temporarily and set a balancing charge on my charger.

Hello, I'm new to mg4. I wanted to ask how to stop charging at 80%, so that when it reaches 80% it automatically stops charging? It would be healthier for the battery, I think. Thanks for the answer.
Welcome to the forum. What model and battery do you have?
LFP you are better to charge to 100% every time but leave it plugged in until the green lights go out around the plug to give it time to balance
NMC normally charge to 80% but every few mths, drive without recharging until down the between 5% and 10%, then recharge at a slow rate to 100% and leave the charger connected for at least an hr after it reaches 100%, or until the green lights around the charger plug go out ..... it needs the deep discharge and long, slow, uninterrupted recharge and time to top balance, to restore full capacity

To change the charging percentage, when you plug the charger in, the charging window will be open on the centre screen, stroke up or down till it changes to the charging/discharging screen, sliding your finger along the highlighted bar on the touch screen will change the max charge percentage ......

@Robertas, welcome to the Forum.

If you have the entry level first generation MG4 (Comfort/Standard/SE SR) then your car has an LFP battery and you cannot automatically limit the battery level (Edit: it is not considered necessary). If you have a longer range version then the battery will be NMC and you will have the ability to set the battery level through the battery tile on the infotainment screen home page or via the iSmart app.

Note the latest versions of the MG4 (2026) have different battery type allocations.

The issue I'm finding with IOG is that the MG4 doesn't like too many stop-starts in a charging session. Too many and the car aborts the charge with a 'check charger' message, our e-Niro doesn't have this problem but our nephew has the same issues with his Ohme/IOG/Volvo PHEV.

I’m often having to go in the iSMART app and restarting charging when this happens

Don't request a charge that will allow a lot more time to complete than actually needed.

My SR will add approximately 13% charge per hour so if I want to add 50% it will take around 4 hours. In this case if you request 50% and a finish time much longer than 4 hours it allows IOG to do lots of stops and starts. So if I plug in at 7am and request a finish time of 11am I would request adding 60%.

Interesting, I'll try that. These days I tend to turn off smart charging and use the Zappi timer instead. The odd thing is that with the Zappi being controlled by the solar excess it doesn't seem to happen.
