Question for the techs , are the modules programable if bought 2nd hand and are already vin coded to another vehicle ? I purchased a motor with module and we fit it to the car but now when i select drive only the parking brake is removed and it will not go into drive. I think as the motor /module are vin locked to the previous vehicle there is no comunication and so it need to be programmed with my vin to work . Can someone from the techs confirm this is is there something else why its not working? Thanks in advance

The motormodule (IMCU) is an immobiliser related module. You can program such a module only one time. When the module is programmed, it knows the vehicle configuration. When the VIN does not match with the vehicle, you can't relearn this module.

But in normal cars you can reprogram the immobilizer and also replace a vin , so why in these where it is even a bigger job to remove this, compared to a normal ECU; you cannot reprogram them? Just MG getting greedy and wanting to make money selling new ones?

But even an ICE car's ecu has an immobilizer, yet they are still programable, and even VIN can be changed , and seeing that the one on the MG is a bigger job to replace than a normal ECU I don't see why they didn't make it reprogramable. These things will make the MG the last EV I get cos these things put me off. It was an easy job replacing the motor, then they stop you with this .

I don't see why the VIN can't be re-coded. We are fortunate that some members have figured out how to update software in a Do It Yourself (DIY) manner. I have no expertise in this area myself.

See this long and technical thread, and perhaps add a short post asking there. I suspect that the forum's firmware update experts don't read this subforum much, as it's usually about hardware upgrades and accessories.

Most modern cars have moved to this. It is to prevent theft, make parts difficult to move on and also a nice money maker being able to only fit virgin parts.

It isn’t really new - BMW based stuff from the late 90s was a pain having to match all modules together and needing the ability to virginise certain bits (thinking speedometers but it was long ago). Eventually people break them and you’ll find virgin dumps of certain chips that can get around this with board level programming or if there is some luck - non-genuine diagnostic/programming tools which don’t respect what the manufacturers have done. As the cars are relatively new, still mostly under warranty - the market hasn’t developed yet.

Yes true as you said but last night found a video of a guy which will be making an open board , in my case we are going to change just this board as he is calling it the logic board and hoping that changing that would fix my problem

This is what you have to do to code modules to a Honda, not sure if MG would be the same
