I very rarely need to use public chargers, but I stopped to put a little bit back into my battery on a recent longer than usual journey. It was very sunny, and virtually impossible to read anything on the screen. Is it too much to ask for charger companies to put some sort of canopy over the EVSE? Perhaps they could remove one of the huge canopies that cover the petrol/diesel pumps?? I have yet to visit one of the super duper EV charging hubs, but they do seem to have thought about customer comfort in various weather situations. We just need more of them!

The Fastned ones have big solar canopies :)

Interestingly, the original UK video advert for the MG4 starts with the Fastned charger at Martlesham on the A12, some local back-roads and a bit of Ipswich at the end.

(the clip includes a naughty ZS too!!)

Purpose built hubs are probably the only place you'll see decent shelters. Most chargers are stuck in car parks and installing a shelter adds a lot to the cost which you would end up paying for over the years.

I have many grumbles about EV charging stations, not least the factors that led to my Trimalleolar Fracture. I cannot talk about the case specifically, though.

In my experience, IF these places have a canopy, they are not sufficient to cover you and the vehicle.

I have to disagree with Steep, though.
Even the newer ones like the Instavolt one we visited on our mega near-900 mile trip recently had nothing canopy-wise and that was a brand new 40-odd bay charging hub just off the A34 near Winchester. Good facilities, like a Starbucks and a toilet block, but no canopies. And no solar, which in that neck of the woods seems a strange omission.

Some places have painted floors in nice bright colours. I don't know why. ICE forecourts do not. And they have a canopy.

Susanna...I agree with you about the screens. Some of them are very small and difficult to read in bright sunlight.
Plus, the other thing that annoys is that (if you want a preferential rate), you have to download the app for that charger, so you end up with loads of different apps on your phone.

Although it is useful to have an Electroverse card.

Even worse, you end up like us, in a motorway service station, under the eye of a camera with signs warning that if you are parked there for more than 10 minutes without charging, you will receive a £100 invoice for the pleasure... Adds to the pressure when you are downloading the app with a poor signal, installing it, entering all your details and then trying to work out how to ask the charger to start charging (it wasn't intuitive).
That was Applegreen. Anyone familiar?

The other thing is displaying prices.
By law, ICE fuel retailers have to display their prices so you know what it is before you dispense. And you have the right to change your mind, replace the nozzle and not be charged.

But, certainly when we got our MG4 in July 23, there were charging points where it was not at all clear what we would be charged per electron.

There was one time in Derby where we struggled to connect to a charger and had three lots of "pre-authorised" £45s going through our account. I rang their helpline and was told not to worry, that only one would go through, but burger me, they all did. So I rang the helpline again. Who were not very helpful. In the end, I rang First Direct who put two chargebacks on the payments. There was a bit of a dispute over it. Even the bank understood that there was only one (car) charge made, but the charger company (forgotten who) seemed to think different. Even though they had refunded the portion of the £45 that we didn't use after finishing charging.

Anyway, 'twas all sorted out by FD.

I promised myself when I was young, I would never be tempted to get a credit card, but now it seems like a good idea for stuff where purchases are disputed. Section 75 and all that.

The other irritant is a general ‘filling’ station should show on the huge sign that they have EV charging. And signage at a motorway service station for the EVSE’s. I drove around one a couple of years ago searching. And searching…..

On these two points, I did say hubs are where you are most likely to see them, not that you would :)
I've used the hub in Stirling and as you say the roofs there are too high and give poor protection. Also the hub in Dundee which is much better, being fully enclosed.

As to painted bays, this comes from car parks I think where they need to differentiate between a charging bay and a parking bay. Drivers of all types are really bad at reading signs but are less likely to miss a bright green or pink or blue... bay surface, done to stop ice drivers hogging bays..

The EV charging station I visited had painted bays. IDK why, it was separate from the ICE forecourts and well away from any other parking places.

Whilst I agree with most of what you say I'm not sure how you missed them but The Winchester Superhub has an on-site solar farm featuring 870 panels and an advanced battery storage system (960kW/4MWh total capacity). As you can see it's partly surrounded by solar panels on this video of the opening of the site

Regarding having to use an app to get a discounted rate, then I believe that is fair enough as otherwise how do you get a discounted/differential rate ? You might argue that perhaps they could just lower the price for all but everything costs and your details are the cost of the lower price these days.

No, downloading an app is bearable as long as you are getting a discount, but the issue was trying to beat the clock against the threat of a £100 charge. We haven't had one land on the mat yet, so I think we're safe...(fingers crossed)

It was pitch black when we rolled up!

Can't you just drive out of the charging place. Download the App, so you don't get fined. Then drive back in.

Hmm.

Didn't think of that in the heat of the moment.

But there may have been some spiteful "No return in xx minutes" in the small print on the Ts and Cs board....

That road trip has also made me realise more and more that local authorities are doing their damndest to keep cars out of town and city centres, even the climate-friendly electric ones.

Going into my home town centre and the neighbouring city centre by public transport is a pain. The buses used to be three an hour when we moved here, then two an hour, now they are one an hour. The Metrolink still hasn't made it to Stockport, so even if it was agreed tomorrow, it would be decades before it was up and running in the borough.

So it's the same old story. It's no good putting people off taking their cars into towns and cities until public transport is cheap, accessible, reliable and regular.

Today, I saw my first EV charging point sign with a huge illuminated price above it. Easily seen without needing to enter the services. Located at Oval Service Station, just off J16 on the M1. They have 4 x 360 kW CCS, 2 x 180 kW and 2 x 80 kW CHAdeMo, all priced at 75p/kWh.

It’s definitely one of the things that EV drivers have been requesting.
