DashCam turns off.

This is a strange one I think, has anybody else had this problem?
I have a Nextbase R522GW dash cam which I moved from my ZS EV to my new S5 EV. It worked perfectly in the ZS plugged into the USB port on the windscreen top camera cover. There is a USB port in the same place on the S5 for the same purpose. However, when I get into the car it switches on as it is supposed to do and the dash cam starts, so the USB port obviously powers up OK. But, when I put my foot on the brake peddle to put it in gear the dash cam turns off and goes into some kind of standby mode I think. There is a blue light on the dashcam but no red light and the screen is off. If I them ease the USB plug in and out of the socket the dashcam starts up again. Funny thing is, it does not happen every time!!

Anybody else come up against this problem??
If so please let me know if you have fixed it and how.

Kinda sounds like its maybe drawing more power than what the USB socket can deliver so it goes into some kind of protection mode or something?
Or that something happens with the USB port when you start the car, some kind of voltage fluctuation perhaps?

I have wondered about the voltage fluctuation. The blue light indicates that it is charging so the power is still there. I have looked in the cam handbook but there is no information on what it would do if the voltage went high or low as far as I can see.

Yeah, its something that would require an oscilloscope to measure and see whats going on i think.
But if voltage fluctuation is the problem, it sounds like a badly engineered power circuit on either the camera or the car.

Then again there could be something slightly wrong with either.. Hard to say.
There are USB testers to be had fairly cheap, and paired with a power bank or something else you could at least check the voltage and power delivery of the usb port. Might be a way forward if nothing else comes up.

Then again, maybe you could just test it with a powerbank and see if it stops charging when you start the car or if it behaves differently. Might give an indication if the port is "bad"

Sounds like it's just going into screensaver mode.
I have a 622GW and it does the same same although you can change this in the settings.
One of the screensaver options is GPS Speed and that’s a pretty useful one to set up.

Was thinking of buying the Nextbase 522 GW and getting it fitted by Halfords after I pick up my new MGS5 Trophy (LR) next week. From what I've read using the front (using the USB in the front mirror) mirror is fairly straightforward but setting up the rear view camera is more challenging. Any advice would be much appreciated.

The only awkward bit is routing the front/rear cable. Did this in my MG5 but haven't yet got round to it in the MGS5.

Have just come back from Halfords and the technician didn't see any problems. With regards to the censor that operates after the engine is switched off he said there is another fitting he will use to ensure the battery doesn't fall below 11 in either car. He was the same gentleman who fitted a dash cam into my present car about ten years ago. He'll take the camera out of my car and fit it into my daughter's new MG3 Hybrid Trophy at the same time.

I have the Viofo A119 v3 and it behaves the similar way, although it doesn’t stop recording completely.

When I get in the car it immediately starts recording. When I then put my foot on the brake it seems to cut the power to the USB port momentarily, which ends the recording, but then it immediately begins a new recording.

I’ll need to check the settings but I think I have a 3 or 5 second delayed start set on the dashcam to mitigate such issues.

Just checked and I had a 5 second boot delay set on the camera, but even when I set it to 0 it still works ok - recording ends and immediately restarts when I press the brake.

I think the issue is just the way your camera handles the brief cut in power to the USB port. Maybe see if it has a delay option.

@MikeM. The blue LED means its charging. My earlier 312GW is also Blue when it's charging, Red flashing when its recording. In practice this means that it flashes blue and purple.

From the Nextbase 522 GW manual it says:
LEDs
Top: Blue - The Blue LED will be on while the Dash Cam is charging. It will turn off when charging is complete, even if the Dash Cam is still plugged in.
Bottom:
Red - The Red LED is permanently on while the Dash Cam is active. It will flash while recording.

If you use the rear view mirror USB you can fit it yourself, doesn't do sentry when the car is switched off, but you can get a plug in rear view camera without extra wiring. Plugs in side of main camera.

It definitely happens to me, I’ve just not complained because my camera doesn’t behave in the same way as yours.

Did you have a look at the settings to see if there’s an option to delay the recording start?

I have a dashcam plugged into that USB . . and yes, I get this behavior. The dashcam starts up when I sit down in the car. I usually take a few seconds to get the tunes going from my phone and swipe down to set MG Custom. Then press the brake peddle to switch into Drive . . at that exact second, the dashcam "reboots".

I haven't bothered to report it to MG as honestly the dascam is back up and running in 2 seconds . . but I guess I should.

Just witnessed this myself today. When I get in the car the dashcam fires up and starts recording but as soon as I put my foot on the brake to turn the car on it reboots and starts again. A bit different to yours but different camera so..
