Do i need a type 2 lead ?

I am fine for charging at home and DC fast chargers are obviously tethered so the question is do i need to buy a type 2 cable ??

I have yet to charge out and about and the only time i can think i may need one is when overnight stopping at a hotel or similar, so my question is for people that have used chargers in these situations are they generally tethered or untethered ?
If they are generally tethered has anyone ever seen one that isnt ?

it just gives you options and there is a lot more free charging available to you?

We bought one, havent used it yet, but for ease of mind.

Imagine getting to a fastcharger, just to find it is broken, some of these places also have the slower 11KWh charge points.

This is of course slow, but if this is the only option to get enough range to go the the next super rapid charger.

This summer we are going on holiday, in a place that has no rapid charger nearby, but they have a few 11 kW charge points, it will be nice to be able to charge at one of those overnight and charging overnight, does not matter if it takes 5 hours to do so.

Hi, DC unit are tethered CCS 'rapid' chargers, fast EVSE'S are tpye2.
If you want to hook up while shopping or in a multistorey you will need a 32A tpye2 cable?

Most non-rapid chargers are untethered type 2. For instance, the free pod points at tescos - 30mins can add around 15 miles, for free - probably makes the travel to the supermarket at least free for most. Also, the type 2 interface seems to be sticking around now, so you will likely be able to keep it when you sell, if you want.
On balance, therefore, if you can get a cable for a fair price, I'd go for it. I certainly used the type 2 to type 1 on my Leaf and found it useful... Which I sold with the car because I knew my next car wouldn't be type 1! ?

As others have said - only the rapid chargers (50Kwh and above) are tethered. All of the others are untethered and, IMHO, I would say you should get a 32A Type 2 cable and keep it in your car.

At some of the charging hubs, the rapids are usually very busy plus if you were near 80% and wanted to top up to 100%, I go to the 22Kwh or 7 Kwh chargers and leave the rapid for someone else who may really need it, or you can put your car on a slower charge whilst waiting for a rapid to become free.

Can't beat a bit of free charging. You never see them giving away free petrol at a supermarket.

NO - The majority don't provide a lead.
YES - You will require your own personal lead at almost ALL of the one's that I have seen.

Fast AC EVSE'S don't generally have a tethered type2 cable.
The PodPoint at Tesco's will need the app to 'confirm' the charge within 15 minutes.
My local Asda has BP EVSE that you start with the BP Pulse app.

UK spec ZS is single phase 7kW inverter and I presume the MG5 is the same, so those will be fine.

You will be absolutely fine on a public 7 Kw post, say at your local super market etc.
These are basically the same unit as the wall box that you have at home.

Very useful if you go for a day out, walking about for 3 or 4 hours whilst parked up and there are 7kW destination chargers. 3 or 4 hours should add 70-90 miles to your range.

We charged 150 miles worth of range while staying at a hotel. If we didn't I would have to use fast charging the same fast charge would cost me £20 on a fast charger so our £39. Night in hotel was really just £20 night in a hotel. That is 50% discount on price. I use free charging a lot tesco is 5 min walk from kids school so I park there at pick up time too get extra 4kwh a day of charging during that time on average. When you have cables to charge you soon find places to use them at for free. We'll worth it

Just so you don't get mixed up when others are talking about it, fast charging is your wallbox and for example Tesco's free chargers, The 'fast' you were thinking about are called Rapid chargers.
