Hello, have had my fantastic MG HS PHEV for almost a month now and wanted to check something out. I am spending almost all my time in EV mode (great) and each night I top up the battery to 100% in readiness for what the next day might bring. My questions:-
  • Is topping the battery each night to 100% likely to increase battery degradation (long term question)?
  • Should I run the engine periodically?

TIA

Hi, Sorry can’t advise but I am awaiting delivery of my car but have the exact same questions so thanks for raising so succinctly. I await replies with interest.

Hi. I have a similar situation. I don't know if it is a good idea, but I too charge up to 100% probably every other night. The only downside I could come across was the issue of petrol degradation. (I now have had the same petrol in my tank for 3 months) So I guess using some petrol from time to time might be something worth considering........online info.>
"Modern petrol does degrade over time. It starts to degrade from the moment it's put into a container, and its quality will decline significantly after a few months, even in a sealed container. Factors like temperature and contamination can shorten this lifespan. While petrol in a sealed car tank or at a fuel station forecourt will likely remain fresh for at least six months, older fuel can lead to poor starting and uneven running".

Hi. Also running mine in EV and a charge last me about a week going to work and back, when charging upto 100% each time. Not sure what the long term outcome will be but so far so good. I have also recently done a long trip manly in HEV mode.

With regard to petrol remaining in the tank, before I picked up the car I was advised to use Premium (Super) Unleaded rather than just Unleaded so that it remains in as good a state as possible. I got the car in February and I have still only fuelled it once, with 57% of the tank still remaining. As mentioned in a different thread, I am shortly going away for a few days without the ability to charge the car, so it will help use up and freshen the fuel stored in the tank.

Charging to 100% every other night or even every night, for that matter, is fine.
As for the fuel in the tank, I have heard that petrol, does go off, usually 6 months or so, probably mostly on cars that never move. At least your fuel is moving about in the tank, and not settling. Can't see you ever having the same fuel in the tank, for months on end.
