Hi have owners found the eco mode any more economical i have tried eco for a few days and then reverted back to normal according to the mpg read out the car did more mpg in normal then in eco

eco mode only seems to lighten the steering for me
I Pete i have noticed the steering is lighter and I can feel a reduction in engine power but I was expecting the mpg to be better in Eco maybe I drive it harder in Eco to obtain the same engine power as in normal mode so the reduction in mpg in Eco maybe my fault hope you're enjoying yor car and welcome to the forum

Still haven't decided what I really think of the car.
There are things that I just hate. Driving with the front window open is just impossible.
The engine reving when there's not even a reason for the engine to be spinning. Sometimes even when going down a slope.

I've had mine since April now done 2000 miles problems encountered so far tail gate strut replaced high level brake light cover replaced due to it being loose and vibrating the engine reving seems to affect the majority of cars MG says it's normal i think the car is limited by the 3 speed gearbox

Agree. I think it is the 3 speed gear box. Seems at times to be in the wrong gear or maybe not enough ratios particularly at higher speeds.

Agreed other owners on the ZS hybrid model have had software updates for the over revving with mixed results personally I think another 2 gears making it a five speed would transform the MG 3, for the money in the UK It's not a bad car and serves my driving criteria now I'm retired and only cover a low mileage maybe development of the car in the future will transform all the problems

But the gearbox is only used when you're going over 50 mph ?
The high revs is the engine spinning the generateur to recharge the batteries and give the motor a boost.

HI Pete According to MG and internet sites the gearbox changes up and down it's gears below 50 mph when it's deemed necessary in climbing hills or an extra load is placed on the car etc the increased noise on my car happens when it is charging the batteries

I reckon in ECO it just gives a softer throttle pedal, so you need to push it further down to get the same acceleration. I guess switching cruise control to bring it up to any pre-set speed would be gentler that in NORMAL/SPORT too. So more economical. Haven't noticed any difference in mpg really but then I probably simply press the pedal to give the required acceleration at the time.

Haven't tried cruise control yet mine is used mostly around urban areas will try it when I go on the motorway in Eco and normal mode

The engine revs, as already mentioned, is to charge the battery to provide enough energy for the electric motor. It seems as though there is an incline sensor which puts the drive train into high rev mode for this purpose.
Ive had my car since May24 and suppose I'm quite 'lucky' in that it only revs to between 2,500 and 3,000 RPM, whilst away from hills at 70 mph it settles at 2,600 RPM.
Im not sure if the supposed software update is going to improve things that much in my case, so I'm not saying anything to my dealer.

If it ain't broke, leave it alone.
Mine reved to 3500 the other day, going up a slope at 30 mph !
ridiculous.

You say you haven't tried cruise control because you only drive in urban areas. I find that is one of the benefits of ACC. driving in 30 and 49mph areas. Just set your target speed at 30 and let the ACC do the rest. By juggling brake and the left hand steering wheel button you have complete control. When i say brake, the ACC controls the braking and maintains your distance/speed, but sometimes it leaves the braking a little bit too late for my nerves and I have to tickle the foot brake to disengage. The ACC is great in that you don't need to worry about straying into the 33/34mph area and getting a ticket.

You should try it with the Lane Keep Assist, it's amazing how far it will steer on its own, far more than my other car which has the same.

I've been playing around a bit with the modes since I got the car in August, so far I've seen:
  • Better mpg with normal mode
  • Eco mode works great for a "one pedal" driving-like experience, since it will have a higher regen breaking
  • Eco mode also "forces" more EV driving, depleting the battery faster and therefore turning the engine on frequently
  • Not much usage of Sport mode, initial feeling is that it's just a tad more aggressive

ECO mode is useful in residential areas and cities, particularly in ZTL (limited traffic zones) where it's best to minimize pollution.

I do use LKA with ACC, I thought they worked together. But, you're right, the car is great for keeping you in lane. You have to watch the right hand bends if vehicles are parked on the left. The little MG gets quite twitchy when it thinks your heading for trouble. I've found if I get a tighter grip on the reins she behaves herself.
