There's a pop off cover on the right hand side of the engine bay cover. Take that off and you can see the battery,

There's a removable panel in the cover which gives access to the battery terminals.

So the emergency pull cord for the charging release is under the plastic cover. How do I remove the cover? In what position should the screws be?

They unscrew (come upwards) and allow you to pop the plastic rivets out, then the cover can be pulled off the velcro. Everyone suggests a 10mm spanner. No one mentions a flat headed screwdriver for the engine bay cover.
