Expensive car suplement

As I understand it the IM5 LR & performance purchased now will be subject to the £440 a year expensive car suplement for the mext 6 years; but if we wait 5 months it will be exempt. Is this right?

Is anyone thinking about delaying their order?

It is from April 2026, but also affect cars bought after April 2025. So if you bought a car between those two dates you wouldn't pay the tax.

Doesn't affect me as I'm only buying cars that I can pay for outright after trade in.

Luxury car tax kicks in at year two and runs to six, so 4 years but yeah it stops for cars up to £50 k next April.

It is the car's registration date that counts, not when you buy it. Although these normally go together, if you are buying ex-demo or pre-registered they will be different.

From the rac via my dealer it seems that the luxury tax threshold increase is backdated to April this year. So that will be good news.
Anyone any other definitive info or links?

All EV cars registered from 1st April 2025 will have the new ECS threshold of £50,000 applied from 1st April 2026.

In plain English, the threshold is £50k if your car was registered on or after 01/04/25.

Personally don't agree, with the so called
"Expensive" car supplement. Why?
Just because your lucky enough to be able to afford a more expensive car. Bloody good luck to ya.
It's still only one bloody car. Taking up One space on the road. It's also against the folk, like us, who perhaps can afford a nicer used "Expensive" car at about 2/3 year's old, and still have to pay the lot more expensive tax.

IM6 performance and launch edition are still above it, affinity scheme discount doesn't help, it's the list price!

Have to say though, the new 3p/mile tax is going to wipe out at lot of the savings on the expensive car supplement, since many people will be driving far enough to be paying an extra £425/yr or so - at least from 2028.

Well, yes - I appreciate you moved the other posts - but this felt directly relevant to the conversation, since the savings from ECS are wiped out.

It does make going above the £50k new limit a very expensive experience, after year one you could be well over £1000 a year.. ouch
