A very good day today 03/09/2021 went to the show very enjoyable day out with my son. We saw lots of new cars and other things, on the MG stand they had a ZSEV exclusive in white, and a red MG5 exclusive standard range, only two you girls on the stand, I ask where was the long range 5 and was told that the car in front of me was the long range!. No I said it’s not,yes I was told that it was, no I said, then the other girl stepped in and said the long range was being used for test drives only but was fully booked, the test drive area was quite away away, so I didn’t go there waste off time trying to ask question about anything else as it was more than obvious they where just there for marketing and didn’t know much about the cars, also met up with podcast member Dave Bell, so had a good chat with him very nice chap, he’s there for the full weekend, just double click on the pictures to open them up.

And got a few goods from the MG girls.

So first port of call was a talk by people about Tesla which was very interesting, and there we where told that the first Model Y to be seen in the UK was on display in the Tesla stand area, so off we went once the talk was over, the talk mainly explained way Tesla are miles ahead and way they continue to keep going that way.
So Model Y pics here, was not allowed to touch it as it belonged to a man from who came from Germany so it was roped off but he was there.

Fantastic car looks much better than the Model 3,with a big big boot and a hatchback, it will sell like hot cakes I sure
Will have to end this here and start another post as I can only post 10 pictures in a thread so here ends part one.

PART 3
A good variety of things to see and do so here are a few more pictures I took today. Below one of the stages with talks on many things electric, like solar, batteries and vans. There are many test drives available but you need to get there early for these as they book up very quickly.

Looks interesting, but please please please try to use some punctuation in your posts - that would make them so much easier to read.
Really? 🙄 I may be out of order here, but, I’m sure others will agree this is a Forum where users are polite and respectful. Your comments are not respectful in my opinion. If you can’t understand or appreciate the words Les has taken time to share with us please, please, please try and use some common sense - that would make this thread a nice place 😊

Good content, thank you. If I get a chance to go tomorrow and Mrs Stuwit46 is agreeable I will 😊

Came to see the show yesterday but traffic was a nightmare and ended up taking me over 6 hours to get here 😡
Gave up and didn't go to the show.
Going this morning so hopefully will get to see as much as possible.

If you want to seen more close up comparison with Model Y and £ "Fully Charged posted a video on YouTube on Saturday! Looks a good 'un and there is a comment on the build quality on the Chinese built Model Y being much better than the Model 3 which of course for Europe are still US built cars.

While you are on the Fully Charged channel check out the review of the Marvel R too.

I was there on Friday and as you say, the traffic getting in was an absolute nightmare. The show opened at 10:00 and I hit the back of the queue at around 10:15. It took me another hour to do the last mile into the car park!!! However, I do think it was worth it and really enjoyed the day.
I must say I was underwhelmed by the MG stand. It was stuck right at the back and didn’t stand out, especially compared to the VW stand next door. That said it was certainly busy when I was there with lots of people looking over the ZS & 5 which were on display. I did manage to blag a baseball cap & drinks flask from them 😀😀.
I’m now trying to mull over the next steps for the house as & when the gas boiler needs replacing. It’s very confusing wading through the options of solar PV, home battery, V2H, heat store, heat pump, smart thermostat, electricity tariffs, etc, etc, etc.

I'm the same lol trying to work out battery storage without solar to charge overnight and use during the day

I've been doing the numbers on the same questions. There is a real advantage of combining storage with PV. I was passionate about PV long before the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) incentives a decade ago and the expansion in the market when the FIT was introduced halved the cost of installing Solar PV. I put on 4kW on my roof at the end of 2011 and then there was a really helpful Generation Tariff and Export Tariff paid on every kWh you generated. I was making £2300 a year in FIT payments and saved electricity costs and yet it took 6 years to get to break even. I move out of the house and left it behind so in effect I had all the hassle and only really got ONE Year's benefit in reality the first 6 years paying for the system. Contrary to the rhetoric of a decade ago having solar on the house actually made absolutely no difference to the sale value or even the interest in my large 5 bedroom house. People viewing (in 018/2018) and the eventual buyers didn't have a clue what it was and what it would do for them. Back then the original FIT was a 25 year contract and payments were over 50p / kWh generated whether or not you used it yourself or fed it back into the grid. The market leader SunnyBoy Inverter had only a 5 year warranty (it could be extended at a cost) and was expected to have a 10-12 year life before replacing which would need another year's income to offset its replacement.

Financial benefits are sadly nowhere near what they were 10 years ago and I recently during this summer got a couple of quotes for 4kW PV + 5.4kWh storage ranging between £7.6k and £10k. Both reckoned with my near south-facing roof to generate 3000 to 3200 kWh pa. Using the higher figure and assuming that the PV and Storage combo might mean that non of the PV generated kWh were sent to the grid and I would be able to use all 3200 kWh, even in the summer, and also assuming that the efficiency of the battery storage and delivery is 100%, then every Solar PV kWh generated would save me buying a kWh from Octopus at 15p/kWh. I would get a saving of £480/year for an outlay of a minimum of £7,600 i.e 15 years 10 months to cover the cost if the inverter lasted that long!

Suppliers of these systems will tell you that PV and Battery gives you free electricity. Not so. Put another way let's assume that the inverter included in the quote (a much less well made Chinese no-name brand with a 3-year warranty) lasts 10 years and the batteries last are still giving 80% capacity. And assume I took the cheaper £7,600 quote. I'd need to realistically not expect a functional or repairable system beyond 10 years, so spreading the £7,600 cost over 10 years costs £760/year. Then £760/3200 kWh = 23.75p/kWh whereas I pay 15p in the day and 5p on OctopusGo to charge my MG. Clearly, providers like Octopus have the resources and the long term investment to scale Solar PV and Wind and make it cheaper for them to generate renewable energy far more efficiently than you or I.

So is it worth getting a Battery Only? To do this you would have to be pretty certain that you'd have a source of lower-cost off-peak Grid electricity you could store and then use or export. Anyone who made their decision to invest in home storage a year ago because they had Octopus Agile or some other "Time of Day Flexible tariff" would have caught a cold because in 2020 there were negative rates and several hours day where the rate was a few pence per kWh now find it is 35p/kWh 23 hours a day (I checked today 14th Sept and it is only less than 35p for 90 mins in 24 hours and never less than 20.91p). The wholesale cost of electricity has risen this year according to Ofcom data it is true, but it is unpredictable and you can not make an investment at a domestic level assuming there will be a sufficient differential in Peak and Off-Peak to give a return on the investment in time to enjoy at least some benefit beyond the break-even date.

There is only then the Green argument. Well yes even if each kWh costs you a premium you are doing your bit to reduce CO2, but you could (and I'm not giving investment advice) look at investments opportunities and bonds which come up all the time to invest in Wind Farms and Solar PV on larger scale projects since they use more optimum sites and orientation than we can at home.

So I'm sticking with OctopusGo and charging my car and running heavy loads at night at 5p/kWh. I've calculated I use 45% of my daily electricity in that 4-hour window. If you've not switched already and would like to charge at 5p use my Octopus referral link and share £100 with me (50:50) go to share.octopus.energy/zappy-guppy-175
