Hello! Newbie here looking for advice!
I’ve seen a 5 year old (late 2020) MG ZS EV for sale with mileage of just over 66k. It’s a good price (for me) and having looked at reviews and YouTube vids, including owners vids, I think it might be just the car for me. But I do have concerns that maybe that mileage is high for an EV of that age and would it mean the battery has little life left in it?

I live on the Isle of Man, so no motorways here, and as I am disabled (unable to walk far) I do use my current (dirty diesel) car for lots of short journeys, nipping into town, the doctors or hospital etc. So range isn’t too much of an issue for me and I would really like to get an electric vehicle but have not been able to afford one before.

I already have a wall charger installed as have previously had a plug in hybrid, and the convenience of ‘fueling’ my car from home, instead of struggling on crutches to fill up at a fuel station, without dropping either crutches, filler hose or worse, falling over myself, is very appealing.

We do not have a MG dealership over here, nearest one I can find is in Lancaster which would mean a 4 hour (horrendously expensive) ferry journey, so I also have concerns about software updates, do these have to be done at MG dealerships or can other service Centres carry them out?

Whilst I have had a plug in hybrid in the past, I am a complete newbie when it comes to all electric, so any advice would be very much appreciated.

Thank you everyone 😊

I have 19 plate zs ev, really love it. Go on youtube and find 'James and Kate' channel. He is mobile ev mechanic with a fleet of MG5S as workvans. He's just bought himself a Mk1 ZSEV with 238,000 miles on it! Paid 3k, it was ex London taxi. He did a diagnostic on it and it's overall battery health was still at 91%!

66k miles is not high mileage on a 5 year old car, EV or otherwise. You can check the battery state of health from its last service and don't forget you still have 2 years/14k miles left on the warranty.

If you are going to be low milage then I think it makes sense to buy a high milage EV as it will be cheaper.

This car doesn't seem high milage, though.

A rough estimate would be that an NMC battery should do minimum 1,000 cycles. Your average range is about 150 miles so the battery pack should do at least 150k. Unless you are very unlucky. Most batteries exceed their minimum expected life of course so I would hope those batteries would last much more and indeed the ex-taxi example above seems to be going strong at nearly 250k.

Software updates shouldn't need to be done regularly. Once you've got stable and working software then the car will keep going fine on that.

Thank you for that, that’s a very good video, very reassuring.

Thank you that’s good to know about the software. I suppose I only thought it was high mileage because others I’d seen online of that age were a lot less mileage. Certainly if it was an ICE car I wouldn’t have thought anything about that mileage. Need to reset my mindset I think 🙂

Yes I forgot about the 7year warranty, that’s a very good point, thank you.

Not high mileage

Range can be pretty poor a very cold winters day though.
Thank you for your reply, I think the furthest I tend to travel in winter, is to our local hospital which is about 3.5miles from my house so a 7 mile round trip altogether. Other than that it would literally be short trips to the local Tesco for a bit of shopping.

EVs are great on a small island! (Or a medium/large island or continent)
