Honest review of the MG4 XPower

Take the rear middle headrest out, most do. Unless you carry 3 in the back on a regular basis. Otherwise it's doing nowt.
Then the rear wiper is useful.

I used to have a BMW M4 280HP. It was a cool car, but I set up 90% of its sporty features in the first month and they were useless for years. On the other hand, it had demanding components, such as a sensitive oil pump, two turbochargers, and active suspension – things whose advantages I never felt, but which cost me huge amounts of money when they broke down. The engine's howl when accelerating always announced, “Oh, it's showing off,” so I often denied myself maximum acceleration. The Xpower handles perfectly, and its rapid acceleration is much more practical than driving a BMW fast, because I almost never drive fast. And what's always funny is buying a city car with a small battery and complaining about the short range. Didn't you know what you were buying? And yes, it is a city car despite its 435HP. So why did you buy an Xpower and expect something from it that it doesn't have? It meets all my requirements, it's hellishly fast when you need it to be, and it's economical in the city. 435HP does not automatically determine other standards, such as long range or incredible cornering (why the hell would you want to drive fast in corners anyway? Suicidal.)

Guessing it doesn’t fit because of the front motor, although the Cyberster GT has a bigger battery I believe on the same platform.

Are you sure you didn’t have a 4 series M Sport, not an M4? No M4 has ever had just 280bhp.

yes, I did know what I was buying. 160 miles from a 64kwh battery is ridiculous. You can get over 300 miles out of a 64kwh battery in other cars, and well over 200 miles from a 50kwh battery too. So being condescending here really doesnt work. Also, it absolutely is not a city car. It’s a family sized hatchback, not a super mini. The Renault5, Mini Cooper E or Honda E are city cars. Not a 5 door MG4 with a 64kwh battery.

A car that’s capable of going from a standing start to 60 in sub 4 seconds absolutely should have uprated brakes, suspension, tyres etc. otherwise it’s not safe. That’s a crazy statement.

And who doesn’t want to drive fast in corners? It’s what makes driving fun. How on earth is that suicidal? there are entire sports and car classes designed to see which cars go round corners fastest, and manufacturers spend millions trying to get cars to corner quickly, smoothly and safely.

The XPower corners well anyway, it’s pretty flat and surprisingly good. But it does get a bit sketchy when you go a bit too fast - if you’ve owned a BMW M4 you’d notice the difference in handling immediately, if you don’t, I’m sorry but you should never have bought an M4!

I have another car for family trips. I just wanted to point out that buying a car with a set of advantages and disadvantages must be a conscious decision. It's like complaining about my old BMW because it wasn't suitable for family driving, was noisy, and had high fuel consumption. Were these disadvantages? No, it was a conscious choice. So this review of the xpower, most of its “disadvantages,” is just a description of bad, ill-considered choice.

The MG4 doesn’t have a ‘small battery’ it’s not a city car. Just like your ‘280bhp’ BMW was not an M4. Just because YOU drive yours in the city, doesn’t make it a city car. I’ve driven a Mini Cooper through a flooded road, it didn’t make it a boat…

I’m glad you’re happy with your car. Congratulations. A little confused as to how you’ve mentioned owning two cars and got the model wrong on your old car and the car class wrong on your current car.

Most of the flaws you mentioned are along the lines of “I chose a car with a small battery—I complain that the car has a small battery.” I understand that you evaluate a car before buying it and then say, “Hmm, this xpower has a small battery, so I won't buy it,” but as it turned out, you made a bad choice consciously and you mention it as a disadvantage. Similarly, I am curious about your opinion on the brakes. I don't believe you experienced any problems with the brakes; you probably just don't like the discs being too small compared to, say, a Lamborghini? Why don't you just write, “I bought an xpower and was surprised that it has so many disadvantages compared to the Tycan.” I chose it as a car for commuting to work and short trips, and it's great for that purpose. We chose the same car, but you chose poorly and I chose perfectly.

My first car, bought with my own money, was cheap, small, slow, and great for any trip. Now that I can be picky and accurately assess my needs, the MG4 only meets the requirements of a city car. Of course, you can drive it all over Europe if you really want to.
