I had a test drive of the launch edition today and really liked the car. Before putting in an order I thought I had better see what the insurance is like, I could only find one really expensive quote from comparison sites, that was from Tesco. My own insurer (Admiral) told be that they can't cover the vehicle. Maybe it is just too new. Has anybody else managed to get a quote in the UK?

The test drive was certainly interesting, after some sketchy reviews I was concerned about the ride and the small back window. I found the ride fine, it is a big heavy and you can certainly feel that. The back window is small but you can still see out, not a massive issue. The acceleration is certainly rapid and power delivery is smooth.

Definitely too early for the insurers to have a price. Experienced the same when I was getting my Ioniq 5.

I seem to remember the same thing happened with the 4 and the S5, most insurers didn't have the car listed when it first came out. ZS was worse because they all thought it was the old MG Rover model. Hopefully sort itself out soon, but seems a bit daft that they never seem to be ready for a new car coming out.

I pick my Long Range IM6 up on tuesday, but having the same issue. I was assured it would be sorted by tuesday, but it's sunday now and still looking for insurance? I'll keep you updated.

Hi all.
I was about to post the same. Had 2 test drives so far; loved the car but I am worried about insurance.
Only insurance quote I got was from Tesco and that was 2.5K!!!!
More worried about the fact that when I raised this with the sales rep from the 2nd test drive he was like I am not expecting it to fall that much from what you got.
I was like: mate if that is the case you are not going to sell many of these.
I called admiral which is my current provider; big fat no. Probably further down the line.
I will hold and wait. Not going through with an order if I am not sure about insurance cover.
Chukensky you are far braver than me. Let us know how it goes with cover.

That sounds so familiar. Tesco were a bit cheaper for me but still way too expensive. I am going to wait a bit and hope that some insurers have reasonable prices. i asked my dealer about insurance, it seems crazy that they can offer test drives in a car that you can't get insurance for.

Good luck Chukensky, I hope it work out for you.

It was the same when the MG3 Hybrid came out last year, initial quotes were relatively high from just a few insurers, but came down by half once all other insurers started quoting.

May I ask who this was with? Picked the car up this morning and they've covered me for 7 days themselves. Hoping the ABI/Risk ratings are loaded on the usual insurance's database by then. If not, I may have to hand the car back as I refuse to pay the quote i received from Tesco.

It was with Tesco via Moneysupermarket

Quick question for you too... if you don't mind = how much was insurance and from what company?
I’m still struggling to find a reasonable price. Tescos are the only company offering insurance, but it’s £1800 and I’m not paying that. My dealership have given me a week on their insurance. I’m hoping I can find insurance by then!!

Best I found so far was from Co-op for 1,2k through u switch site.
Admiral do not insure for the time being and this is my current insurer.
Other big companies not on comparison sites do not provide quotes to me either.

For content 45 years old male, 14 years Non claim (was living outside UK before), no other mitigating factors. Liverpool postcode is probably one though :P

Ok I had some free time today and started playing with the comparison sites.
Found that Uswitch for me provides the lowest quotes.
Tried both IM5 and IM6; all versions.
I think the problem with pricing may be the versions.
So for IM6 the prices I got are the following:
Long Range: £600!!
Performance: £1600
Launch Range: £1200 (this with a known licence plate).

IM5:

Standard: £450!!!
Long Range: £600
Performance: £1600

I am wondering now if the problem is the horsepower...If that is the case then I can't see it going down any time soon from now.
Hmmpfff

Was this with Tescos? I don’t get how I’m getting £1800. I’m 27 with no claims and 9 years NCB. I’ve been insured on much sketchier cars for significantly cheaper.

For the IM6 launch tesco was £2.5k for me.
Using the license plate from the car I test drove co-op gave me the £1.2k I am referring to in my post.
Admiral which is my current insurer refuses to insure for the time being.
The cheap prices for the lower HP versions that I got from Uswitch are from Directline which are not generating a quote on their site either for the launch or the performance.

Have you tried the likes of a specialist broker; like AdrianFlux etc?

For content I am 45, no claims and 14 years NCB. Currently I am paying £450 on my Dual motor Model 3 which is to be fair 6 years old. When I first got it I think I paid 800; I may be wrong though...
