Many cars ago, my VW was super cleaned every single time I took it in - even if it was just to briefly look into a problematic switch. It was a good thing, and I do miss it. (though I don't miss paying £8 for washer liquid top up - even when it was already full - and that was 15 years ago!)
As time passed, and my cars changed, the level of service dropped: My Mazda was cleaned, but not very well. My Nissan was sometimes vaguely cleaned. And the MG is simply untouched.
If it helps keep the cost down, I'd prefer to not have it cleaned - my first service cost £85.
