Is this something I should go to dealer about? (Paint related issue)

I've never owned a new car before so I'm unsure but to me this feels like something that seems below par. My bonnet has 3 paint chips on it. I know this stuff happens but these are in three different places so they're not part of the same occurrence. This seems excessive for the 10 months Ive own the car. I looked over my Hyundai and it has nothing like this level of paint removal after 7 years of use on the same roads.

To add to matters I was washing the car and I stripped paint from the chipped areas during washing. I hadn't checked the bonnet for chips so maybe this is on me.

I got the red tri coat hoping it would be more robust having three paint coats.

Back to my main question: is this above expected wear and tear and should I talk to dealer about it?

The second picture definitely looks like a stone chip, not sure about the two in the other picture they look a bit out of focus.
I doubt if you'll get any joy from the dealer after 10 months, as soon as you drive off the forecourt, stone chips can occur.
You can't really compare it to other cars, it's like saying, "I got a cracked windscreen but have never had one on my other cars" it's just bad luck I'm afraid.

Probably you could claim if the paint defects were in a position where stone chips don't occur, which still would be difficult to convince the dealer.
 
Stone chips happen but that massive area of missing clearcoat is surely unacceptable pressure washer or not. You should really need sandpaper to remove properly stuck paint.
That's going to need a repaint, adhesion issues in that area at least IMO.

I think the power stripped it though. Do you mean something else? It shouldn't have stripped the way it did?
 
Each layer of paint should chemically bond to the next when it's still 'open' ie, not cured.
If a paint layer is left for weeks then it would need to be roughed up for another layer to mechanically bond.
Your tri coat will have the base colour, pearl layer then clearcoat. Usually the deeper layers are water based and the clear 2k solvent, maybe something went wrong causing them not to bond.

I've sprayed a few bumpers and what not over the years finishing them with 2k clearcoat and I've always found that it adheres like a limpet, great on the panel you're aiming at but impossible to remove any overspray on adjacent panels if you've been lazy with masking.

Wished in the past that it would come off with a jeto_O you live and learn . But no, definitely should not, you should raise it with your dealer IMO.
 
On the contrary, it is very common.
Do a google search on Lacquer Peel.

Looking at your first picture.... are you Tin Tin ? ;)
 
When zooming in close on that large stone chip it has exposed the bare metal.
Is it fairly recent, as I can not see the onset of rust developing ( which is a good thing ).
What type of pressure washer where you using and more importantly, what type of lance / nozzle where you using on the car ? ( any photo's plz ).
The two long tight horizontal lines in the paint, where the clear coat has been removed, could indicate that a high pressure tip / lance was used.
It is so very easy to select the incorrect nozzle for the job.
In the picture below, the nozzle in the ( top R/H corner ) is an absolute NO NO on body work.
The second nozzle ( bottom L/H ) is of the variable type and can be adjusted accordingly to increase / decrease the pressure applied.
I know this may sound a little crazy suggestion, but only last week I stopped my neighbour who was just about to start his white Tesla model 3 with a dirty blaster nozzle on his lance.
He had been cleaning down his driveway a couple of weeks ago and had forgotten to switch back the nozzle.
Lucky escape !

I was using the adjustable one. I was aware and being careful (obvs not careful enough!) not to strip paint using a too tight spray. I may have gotten too close though. Couple with the chip maybe that did it.

Really ? on a practically brand new car ? Maybe on something that's been exposed to a dozen summers in the south of france.
My DIY panel repairs NEVER peeled in the subsequent years I owned the cars, and I'm someone using a fifty quid spraygun and wheezy old compressor in my garage.

In no way acceptable IMO, even for MG :oops:
 
I'm a little concerned how easily it chipped to be honest. Maybe it's bad luck but I've not had this much paintwork damage so quickly as far as I can recall. I've seen people getting their cars wrapped. Does that help with protecting from damage like this?

Mine was delivered with 5miles on the clock & had several chips & a scratch.
I sent it back.
This is seemingly the flawless undetectable repair done by the dealer. 🫣
I am now in the process of exercising my short term right to reject.

That is a pretty shocking state for a brand new car to be in, similar to mine now but at least there's 11k miles on the clock.
The steel on these cars seems to be paper thin too, a nasty stone chip low on my drivers door has also left a slight dent.
Even after carefully touching it in, the reflection in the surface distorts around the chip. The black pearl mine is painted does show imperfections particularly readily it must be said.

Black is a bugger to keep perfect.
Was originally asked to take mine locally for a quote,
Went to two body shops, who both quoted around the £1200 mark & both said the bonnet,door,front and rear wings would need spraying to blend it in,
The dealer said this was nonsense, & took the car away to their own "specialists"
I'm not sure what their speciality is,but it ain't painting 😅
