Juddering Wipers

I have had my MG3 about 6 weeks and today was the first time out in the rain. The wipers judder something terrible. I have tried cleaning screen and wiper blades but made no difference. Has anyone else had this problem?

Yes, but on old cars with sloppy mechanisms.

If the screen is clean and the blades are clean and in good condition, and the screen is wet, I'd say there shouldn't be any juddering.

I'd run it back to the dealer and see what they suggest.

A 6 week old car shouldn't be suffering that problem.

The judder will be caused most likely by the angle of the blades against the glass. They should be at at perfect 90 degree angle to avoid judder. On an old car the fix would be to bend the arms slightly to get the wiper blades to the correct angle.

Wiper blades are designed to work by having a wiping action, they do this by flexing along the thin middle section of the blade between the part in contact with the glass, and the frame on the back of them as viewed end ways on, thus producing a flipping action. When they judder they are not wiping but trying to scoop the water away by not flipping. Usually this happens to old blades when they get set in one position and don't flip on the upwards wipe and get set in one postion caused by extreme heat and cold. Usually replacement is the only answer, why this has happened to a new car I'm not sure.

Hi. I had exactly the same problem when I purchased my MG3 Hybrid. I took the car back to the dealer, and they replaced the two front wipers FOC. No problem since.

i think they went cheap with the ones that came with the car. i took over ownership at the car 6 months old and they were terrible no matter how much i tried to clean them/glass. i even polish the glass and still no good. a trip to costco and got a pair of Michelin's and problem free since.

I replaced with silicone blades..

Mine are doing the same, I think the high temperatures we've had recently made the blades worse. Yesterdays rain was making them judder a lot. A trip to Halfords today I think!

I've been getting Bosch Aerotwin for various cars past and present and they are brilliant. They just last forever.

Thanks for the tip, as I went to Halfords today and they don't stock a wiper blade for our car!!

I replaced with silicone blades..

Here in New Zealand I have not been able to find replacement blades up to now other than original MG replacement which I don't want again. Now I have found replacement "Wipertech" blades. I think this is an Australian company. My question is how to get the old ones off? I can see a push button each side of wiper arm, but pushing these in does not seem to release the blades.

Not familiar with them, but do they release if you push them in simultaneously?

Sometimes, these things get a bit jammed up. Give it a good wiggle!

We just use Rainx on the windscreen, rubbed in with a paper towel, and some in the washer water .... it creates some sort of film on the window that makes the rain droplets form into beads and run off rather than making it hard to see through when the rain is closer to a heavy fog, Scotch Mist we call it, too miserable to rain great on the inside for vehicles with crap demisters as well. The blades just slide across noiselessly now, when they start to make a noise, a quick squirt with the washers and all is well again It's also great for getting the oil and diesel mess off the window that makes those smears that the wipers just seem to spread rather than clean ..... not so good at removing the goo left behind by some of those monster bugs and moths ..... they are something else ...... metho on a paper towel seems to work best ......

I tried RainX with the previous car and I found all it did was smear everything and make it really difficult to see, not easier!

I cleaned out the washer reservoir with IPA (isopropyl alcohol, NOT India Pale Ale!) and cleaned the screen and blades with it too and luckily there were no worries after that.

The only time I have issues with the RainX making oily smears on the windscreen, if it one of those giant bugs or moths suicide into the windscreen .... what ever in in them, it took metho and paper towel to get off ......

Well, at least it got you out of the house and doing a bit of running I meet the most interesting people when I go running, from the ambulance driver and paramedic, to the staff in the emergency room putting the oxygen mask on me while they do an ECG .....

Did you clean the windscreen and then polish the RainX into the glass till it was clear again?
The only time I have issues with the RainX making oily smears on the windscreen, if it one of those giant bugs or moths suicide into the windscreen .... what ever in in them, it took metho and paper towel to get off ......

I tried RainX and it seem to make the juddering worse. I have now replaced the original wiper blades with Wipertech blades and no more problems.
