Long motorway round trip in MG S5EV – Update after completing the trip

Charging curves are always handy to know so you can balance how much charge to put in between stops and how long you will have to wait to get to a certain level of charge.

As a new EV driver this is a really interesting comparison.
I'm coming from a V8 diesel Cayenne and I've tracked my fuel use using the fuelly app over the last 40k miles, so if I take those averages, this trip would have seen

Average efficiency 28.5mpg
Average diesel cost per gallon £1.54
Total cost of trip £170.94

Seems a huge difference, but I would have done each leg in one go, only filling up before I left my destination to come home, I can't abide "stopping for coffee" on a journey, I like to get in, drive, get out.

This I think may be the biggest issue I have with my new EV, I do quite a lot of long distance driving and never, ever stop!

What price convenience I guess.
Where can you get diesel for £1.54 a GALLON, litre surely

I'm amazed you're getting a range of 245 miles at this time of year. I have just done a round trip of about 380 miles - 188 miles on Xmas day & 192 miles back home today. It was pretty cold on Xmas day & I only had 13% left when I got there, remaining miles was 26, so in theory range was 214. Coming back I had 17% left when I got home, remaining miles was 37, so range in theory was 229 (bang on the predicted range when charged to 100%).

At least I didn't have to charge along the way. Charging at home with IOG @7p per kWh, & about 20p per kWh, charging at my Sister's (granny charger - took 26 hours !)

I was lucky that both days of travelling were clear and bright; I didnt have to use the heater all the way. I am sure that would have contributed to the increased range. Additionally, I used the Motorway all the way and driving at or around the legal limit.

Didn’t want to risk that Gary in case we got stranded as heavy snow was forecast and wanted some reserve will home charge to 80% when I am down to 20%

All the best
Chris
My trip to Scotland last year I calculated I'd get home at around 11% but the A17 was so slow moving I ended up with 17% at home. I tend to keep an eye open for new chargers appearing near home so I can splash and dash if I get it wrong.

I’m not long back from a trip to Cumbria, one which I have done several times before.

On the outbound trip a few days ago, it took 81% of the battery to reach Carlisle (I’ve done it with 65% in the summer).

This morning I charged to 90% at Carlisle (couldn’t be bothered waiting any longer) and expected to be have to do another small charge close to home, given that the temperature was showing as -7C.

So I was pleasantly surprised that despite the freezing conditions, with a bit of careful acceleration and limiting the speed to 65 and later 60, I was able to achieve 3.1m/kWh and got home with a single charge and only used 82% of the battery.

Also it looks like I’ll be giving the car a good clean tomorrow 😮

Oh my goodness. That would be so satisfying to wash
I agree. It's worth getting the full kit out for that level of crud. Pressure washer, snow foam, wash foam, aqua wax, large drying cloths, tyre dressing and of course photos of the finished product.

In the summer, yes! This time of year (-6 outside at the moment) I'm afraid it would be surfex, snow foam, pressure rinse, snow foam, pressure rinse then final rinse with water from dehumidifier and drip dry.

Believe it or not, I got my trusty power washer out yesterday and it decided to break on me, with water pouring out of the bottom.

I’ve taken it apart today and the pump is visibly broken. I reckon I can DIY repair it so I’ve ordered a new pump assembly.

It means the car will need to wait a few days for its wash, but it’s snowed and rained a bit today and the car doesn’t look nearly as bad with a bit of moisture added. It’s the dry winter dirt and salt that always looks bad.
