Oh! I remember now. I did in a Leyland National with a semi automatic box that used the air pressure to power assist the steering. Worked OK until doing low speed manoeuvres when the air pressure would drop and you'd lose the steering. You would have to sit there revving its nuts off to build the pressure back up again.

Oh! I remember now. I did in a Leyland National with a semi automatic box that used the air pressure to power assist the steering. As a school kid I would sometimes stand at the front of the bus ( Atlantic I think ) and watch the driver chose the gears through a pre select transmission . Never did work out how they worked or were operated ? Lovely nice big front screen to go through if there was an accident , but hey ho ! that was the 70s for you. There was also the emergency engine kill button on the rear nearside quarter which was a temptation for the budding scallywag of teenage years.

Pre-select was great!

Move gear level to 1st gear (bus stays in neutral). Push down select pedal and as you lift it, the bus goes into gear, remembering of course to add some power!

To change gear, move lever to next gear and when you wanted to change gear, push down pedal and as you lifted your foot the new gear engaged.

Think of it as pre-selecting your next gear but the gear change happened at the point you used the extra pedal. Not quite like a clutch, but certainly not automatic as you could stall the engine.

Specifically developed for former tram / trolleybus drivers moving onto a diesel bus.

Wow - an Airbus A330-343 just flew over my house having taken off from Edinburgh in its way to Beijing. It’ll be there in 9 hours. Didn’t know that was possible, I haven’t seemn that flight before.
I’m assuming it’s some folks going right up to the MG factory to collect their new car ??
