Hi recent member here , MGA5 on order expected late dec early Jan
Beginning to read lots of electronic issues with this model, parasitic battery drains, boot not opening , car not opening, car not closing
Car not charging , dealer issues, etc etc
As it’s Xmas and I’m thinking have I made a big mistake ….. are there any nice happy stories about what a lovely car this is and how it’s the best thing you have ever owned just to take away the dread… 😱

Only had ours around 4 weeks, but we already love it.
I think it takes a little while to get used to that steering wheel!
Same here, i wasn't convinced about the steering wheel when I had a test drive, but after 5 months of ownership it now feels very natural. In fact I find that the steering is generally one of the aspects I like most about the car. It has a very tight turning circle and, for me, the turning ratio is spot on.

Yes, there are aspects of the software that can sometimes be flaky. But, to be honest I have most things turned off via MG Pilot so I don't suffer too many unwanted distractions.

My three main complaints are:
1. The DAB radio is absolute crap.
2. I would have liked the inclusion of front parking sensors.
3. I dislike the location of the usb ports under the centre arm rest.

My main likes are:
1. Steering, as above.
2. Performance, even in Normal mode.
3. 360 deg camera.... also had it in previous 2 Volvos but I think MG implementation is better.
4. OPD. Regen is spot on in my opinion and I never use anything else.
5. The rattle inside the front door (re my very early post on here) has now gone 😁

To the original poster... don't be put off, it's a very nice, good value car.

I love mine, had it nearly two months now.

Beautiful drive, I get a good 3.9 mls per kWh, less if I blast the heating but I expected that.

Good range even though it's cold weather right now. Heated seats and wheel are brill!

Performance is 😆 amazing

Dealer was brill with a warranty issue, small upholstery defect I should have spotted.

Get good charge speeds out and about, never had a 'non charge'.

Honestly it's a great car!

There are quirks... Yes, there are. Things that I imagine MG are going to work out of thier product line over time, silly things like menu settings not 'sticking', lights and screen brightness quirks (auto full beams suck, also android auto seems to kick out the night time screen brightness - hard to reproduce and so intermittent). But they are low level things. The app does need work, let's just be honest 😆 it really needs a work over from a usability perspective. You shouldn't have to guess which menu or options button things are hiding away under. But it works.

My thoughts before buying was... Yes, they've done it, they've made a roughly 30k car, with the right range, with the right look and feel, they've really made the cabin more welcoming, yup they've done it. And months later I feel the same!

Read about any manufacturers 'quirks' they've all got them. A friend who has a 'popular' European car, absolutely despises his purchase, not only for the 'quirks' that aren't really even quirks IMHO but bigger issues that in hindsight he wishes he had seen. But then even those too will work them out, EVs are a whole new product range in my opinion they are going through a range of value and proposition shifts and will keep doing so.

MG S5 for me hits a stable-ish position in a moving market, and for me it had that 'old slipper' feel, it just worked.

Enjoy it, don't try to compare it 😊 they all differ for better and worse. Some unacceptably so, not the S5 (again IMHO).

Good luck, and enjoy! 👍

What colour did you get?

I have had mine for about 3 months and I am still extremely happy about it. I am still buying little accessories here and there. I still maintain its cleanliness religiously. I still take photos of the car after a good wash. I still gaze at the curves. I still get zen-ed out by the interior when i get in the car. I still enjoy the generous soft touches everywhere. I still enjoy how comfy it is. I still enjoy that bit of instant torque when you need it. I still enjoy sitting (and lying down) at the back seat when the wife drives.

So yes, im still in love with the car.

I agree.

But then ...DAB is crap anyway.

And FM on my S5 is not great either. Its either less sensitive or not switching to a stronger transmitter when going through a weaker reception area, e.g. when I drive through Storrington, its noisy on Radio 4. That wasn't the case in our old Yeti, but that had a proper roof area, not a converted demister panel.

However, most of the time I Bluetooth Radio Caroline from phone to car's audio system & it sounds great!

1. I find the DAB radio to not be "unacceptable" overall! Yes, there can be real problems caused by the radio switching between DAB and FM when the signal for the former drops out.
2. Have you tried activating the 360 camera when moving forward slowly, as you would when parking? On mine, doing so shows the "forward" view, though I do agree actual sensors would be even better!
3. I agree. Those ports can be very difficult to access!

Mine has been great, early doors as I only collected on 20/10 and we don't do massive miles these days. Mine is on 1100 miles roughly.
DAB is OK can be flakey, it was last weekend in bits of Norfolk.
Had the entire entertainment screen corrupt at one point! All pixalated. But still Naving & Radio OK.
On restart was fine.....

Some great replies, cheers
The lease company gave me the option of black or silver so went with the silver to match the grey interior. The lease deal was for the long range trophy model and it’s a lot more car than I thought I could afford , just a good deal which suited me . The Ev charger is installed so just waiting on delivery , mg may have a Xmas shut down so that may mean a slight deliv delay . Still have my old car to run around in and then see what we buy or motorway offer .

We've had ours for about five months now, and we think that it's superb. Lovely to drive, fast when you need it, very comfortable. Like most modern software driven cars, it has a couple of oddities, but luckily you can turn the worst offending safety features off and save the settings. When you start up just swipe down, press a button and confirm and they're all truned offf again.

All this talk about external arials reminds me of the early 70's when it was standard practice among 'enthusiasts' to drill a hole in the wing and install an 8 ft fibre glass whip and pin it back to the roof gutter.
If I thought there was a standard antenna connection in the back of the S5 dashboard I could be tempted to go 'retro'. 😅😅
