Just out of curiosity I have uploaded MG UKs privacy policy to google gemini and asked it to summarise the stuff in it. This was the response, take it as you wish but it only used the publically available privacy policy I downloaded to prepare this no other data source. I am sure if I were to do the same for VW, Hyundai etc it would be very similar.
MG Motor UK maintains several privacy policies depending on whether you are using their website, visiting a dealership, or using their "iSMART" connected car services.
Summary of the Privacy Policy
MG Motors UK collects data to manage vehicle sales, warranties, and customer support. The policy generally covers three categories:
* Identity & Contact Data: Name, address, email, and phone number.
* Vehicle Data: VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), registration details, and warranty history.
* Service & Transaction Data: Records of MOTs, repairs, and parts ordered through authorized dealers.
The data is used to fulfill contractual obligations (like roadside assistance), send service reminders, and—if you provide explicit consent—marketing communications. They share this information with their dealer network and third-party service providers (like IT and telecommunications partners).
Does it report car use details back to MG servers?
Yes, if your vehicle is equipped with MG iSMART (connected services), the policy explicitly mentions that car use and status details are reported back to MG servers.
According to the "Data Protection Notice for Connected Vehicles" and the "EU Data Act" disclosures:
* Data Collected: MG collects vehicle status, location (GPS), battery status, diagnostic data, and engine performance details.
* Specific Use Details: If you use the iSMART app or the onboard navigation, MG processes real-time data such as current mileage, energy consumption, charging history, and even "destination" information for navigation services.
* Storage & Transmission: Data is initially stored in the car's control units and then transferred to MG servers (historically located in Paris, France, for European/UK users) to provide the app services.
* Purpose: This reporting is used for vehicle diagnostics, maintenance notifications, product development, and the functional operation of the iSMART app.
Control Over Your Data
* Right to Object: You have the right to object to this processing, though doing so usually disables the connected features of the car.
* Data Portability: Under the UK GDPR and the Data Act, you can request a copy of the data generated by your vehicle (often available in CSV format) through their Data Protection Officer at [email protected].
* Anonymization: MG states they aim to anonymize data where possible for "product development and quality improvement" to ensure it cannot be linked back to you personally.
