MG4 - checking/changing fuses

The other day I noticed that the 12v socket in the centre console of my MG4 SE LR had stopped working. I'm wondering if it might be that the fuse has blown, so I had a look in the manual and found the info on fuses. My question is, how important is it to disconnect the negative battery cable before pulling a fuse out of the board?

I don't think I've ever had to do that in previous ICE cars. Does it result in any personalised settings being lost etc?

You should not need to disconnect the 12v battery to replace a fuse. I never have...but it depends how confident you are?

Thanks - I too don't think any harm will occur if I don't bother to disconnect the negative terminal before I pull a fuse out the board, but the manual says you should.

MG are just being ultra cautious as it's quite possible for an untrained person to short something out whilst poking around inside.

OK, had a look for the passenger compartment fusebox and it's not easily accessible. You have to pry off the driver's side end panel of the dash, undo a load of screws and unclip the cover - very poor design - as shown in this video
(at 34:30 if it starts at the wrong place)

I think I'm taking it to the dealer for them to do it under warranty. The fusebox under the bonnet is very easy to get to and open, but the fuse I need to check is not in there.

Going back a step what, if anything, did you plug into the 12v outlet to cause the power issue? I am just thinking out loud about warranty claim and dealership asking the same question and if they don't like the answer.....

Just a plug in USB adaptor - it's been working fine for ages, and at the time I guess it may have shorted, there was only one phone/lead connected. Nothing with a big power draw. The adaptor is still working fine when I tried it in our Skoda Octavia. They didn't seem interested to know anything about what had been plugged into it when I went in to book it in.

Interestingly, Bath MG checked the fuses today while doing other work and nothing has blown, so they now want to take out the whole centre console to be able to run diagnostics, and may need to replace the console completely - glad it's still in warranty, and that I didn't go to the trouble of trying to get to the fuses myself.
