Hey

I know there has been chats in some post about insurance for the MG5 Facelift but wanted to start a dedicated post.

This information has been shared. I believe it to be correct.
MG5 ABI codes and group ratings
SE Group 30 ABI Code 33701362
Trophy Group 31 ABI code 33701363

I am currently with Admiral (multicar). They are struggling to get me a quote. I have given them all the details and they are talking it to their "specialist" team to try and get this sorted.

How is everyone else doing?

Have been trying to get insurance for the MG5 Trophy for the last 2 weeks with no success.
The car is not on the insurers database and they cannot tell me when it will be added.
All the comparison websites come up with an old MG ZR petrol hatchback from 20 years ago when I enter the number plate. Have tried entering number plates from other cars on sale and get the same result. MG have helpfully suggested that I insure the car as the MG5 Exclusive instead, which would invalidate the insurance anyway.
Was told that there was the same problem with the MG4 too and that it was sorted in a few days. Have also tried Admiral and they will get back to me in the next 72 hours, whether they can insure the car or not. Have given them the same ABI code, but didn't help. Very frustrating as had waited since January for the MG ZS EV and wasn't prepared to wait for another 6-12 months they quoted. Am looking to see what other makes are available now.

Hi, ive just purchase a MG5 and had trouble insuring it as you've described. I got cover straight away when i went to Direct Line, def give them a call. P.s im not a direct line employee i was insured with Halifax but they wouldn't cover me.

Good to know.

Just rang Direct Line, they only have the MG5 Excite and Exclusive models on their database, so were unable to insure the MG5 Trophy model until it has been updated.
It was worth a try anyway.

I'm struggling with this too. I pick my car up tomorrow.

The dvla check now has the correct car listed (which took a while).

What are the options? I'm a bit concerned.

My mg4 suddenly appeared a few days before I picked it up.

I’m also in a similar position. Also tried Admiral and they have escalated. They can see the Trophy in one of their databases with the associated ABI code shared in the first post, but it won’t pull through into their quoting system.

Hi, i explained my situation and the guy on the phone said yes to covering the MG5 trophy under the exclusive as i explained. He amended the policy to reflect this and sent the docs with the notes added on.

Last week I insured a facelifted MG5 LR Trophy with Direct Line. They didn't have the model listed and the reg no. was not found because it hadn't yet been registered.
I said (correctly) that it's a facelift of the Mg5 LR Exclusive with changes to the trim and the bodywork.

On that basis they chose to put it down as Exclusive which is how it appears on the insurance doc.
Just in case of dispute in future I insisted that they added a note saying that I'd made them aware that the official model name is MG5 LR Trophy.
The agent said their system didn't allow them to add a note on the insurance doc or even send me an email confirming that it's actually a Mk2 Trophy, but a note would be added to my internal account details.
Just to be sure it's noted on their internal system I phoned afterwards speaking to a different agent and asked them to read out to me the note from their system saying it is actually a Trophy, and they did so correctly. I've got the date and time the note was added and the name of the agent that first added it in case of any disputes.

Hope this might help someone.

Not sure how you got them to add that Bovyboy, as my agent claimed it was impossible (maybe just too much trouble) - see my last posting.

Out of interest, has anyone compared prices for MG5 LR Exclusive and MG5 (Mk2) LR Trophy?

Hi

Glad you got your cover, my conversation with them was almost exactly word for word the same lol. I suppose it's all down the agent in question 🤔 in how much they try to help.. No I didn't try the comparison would be interesting though.

Just called Direct Line up with no joy.
I explained everything that's listed on here around insuring it as a different model and Silvia said that that's not something that can be done.

Looks like I might have to delay my pickup.

I might phone the garage up. There used to be a 7 days insurance included, a few years ago but when I picked up my MG4 they said they'd stopped doing this.

Any other ideas welcome!

Probably difficult to do if you can't get the figures for the Trophy.

Try MG Insurance, they are stupid expensive but they will cover you.

I hadn't thought of MG insurance.

I've just got cover with A - Plan who normally deal with modified cars. Seemed expensive (£600) but I've not been able to use my no claims bonus as I've had a company car for a number of years.

They've used the excite (whichever was closest - can't remember) and built it from that. They'll update it to Trophy when the model comes on the database.

If you'd prefer to contact us, please call 03330 151 845.

I was served by Debbie at their Tooting office. Super helpful and it's nice talking to a person.

Hope this helps some people, off to pick up my MG5 now!

Thinking about it, think what might have helped me with Direct Line is that I went through the whole quote process online (putting vehicle as LR Exclusive), got a price, and then I phoned them saying I was happy with the quote but explaining that the model name wasn't correct. That's when she said let's just leave it as Exclusive and attach a note saying its actually a Trophy.

Perhaps because she knew they were going to get some money from me, and she didn't have to go through all the questions by phone, it might have tipped the balance.

Perhaps if I'd done it all by phone she would have given up at the "What model is It" stage which is near the beginning.

Just tried MG Insurance, they couldn't find the car from the number plate.
Entered it manually as an MG5 Trophy and they said that that they couldn't provide a quote. If MG can't insure the car, there's not much hope for anyone else.
