I have recently changed from a MG ZS to the MG5 fl and assumed the infotainment was faulty as my MP3 player (working fine in the ZS) would not work in the MG5. The dealer tells me it’s not a fault and it may be possible to use connect the MP3 player to the car via the headphone jack socket and the LHS usb socket. Anyone tried this? Alternative is using a flash drive but warned this may get hot or pay Apple to download all my (already owned as CDs) music onto my iPhone via iTunes. So much for progress! Anyone else tried the above or got a better solution?

Will your phone not pair with the car? if you can make/receive calls on it it should play music fine.

ah, sorry, MP3 player, no idea m8 sorry.

I use a bluetooth speaker connected to my phone in mine as I hate AA and the car always reverting to some radio station that I never use means I leave the car volume off.

Like it or not, the car industry considers CarPlay / Android Auto as the future, USB support is currently at best rudimentary and will eventually become a thing of the past.

The MG5 is known to be ‘fussy’ when it comes to USB cable connections; it’s recommended to use a wireless dongle for a reliable connection to AA/CP.

Does the MP3 player have Bluetooth? If not, it used to be possible to buy a Bluetooth adapter that you plug into a headphone socket. I used to have one to get a signal from a LW radio to a Bluetooth crash helmet. I don't know if you can still get them.

Thanks Kevin, Unfortunately the MP3 player does not have Bluetooth. Good advice regarding the adapter which I may go for. Again seems a backward step from MG that the MP3 worked fine in the ZS but MG5 is more fickle.

Thanks Mickey, I suppose my LPs at 33 rpm will be the next to go!

Good idea but do you not agree we should not have to find ways around modern technology to provide acceptable entertainment in our cars?

Yes, but remember the MG5 is a discontinued eight year old model of car and the entertainment system is not the latest tech. Yes it should just work but when it doesn't MG are not going to fix it so you do the best you can to find a solution that suits you.
What works for me is a separate sat nav system (TomTom) and a BT speaker for music, I don't want to spend my days fighting a system that isn't going to work the way I want it to.

To be fair, I don't suppose many people are still using MP3 players rather than their phones these days. Good luck with the Bluetooth adapter. I didn't use mine for all that long but it did solve a particular problem.

Try different cables and if you find one that works, don't take it out of the car... I've had this with my Polo and now with the MG5 LR...
