MG5 long range 71 plate SOH After 62000 miles. Do you have any figures?

I have a 71 plate MG5 long range and covered 62000 miles in 2 years. Just had 4th service and was told my battery SOH is now 94%.
I just wondered if anyone else has SOH for similar mileage/ age and if anyone thinks this is good or bad?

My 71 plate was measured at 98% at about 22 000 miles, so that doesn't seem too unreasonable. I'm assuming you do a lot of DC charging, with that mileage, which would degrade the battery a bit faster than home AC charging.

thanks for replies. Very interesting. I do nearly all of my charging at home 5 nights a week as I do over 100 miles a day commute. 95% is motorway driving so that might be another factor.

I doubt it, but maybe you charge to 100% SOC regularly?

Yes I do charge to 100% every night as I can’t get intelligent octopus to charge to say 90%.

We might be on to something here:

• what is the SOC when you arrive back home?
• what is your charging schedule?
• what time do you leave in the morning?
• do you have a 7kW wall charger?
• is the car staying at 100% charge over the weekend?

My SR was measured as 98% at about 50k miles (now just over 70k).
It's charged to 100% 5 times a week at 3.5kW and stays at 100%
SoC on return home can be anything from 8% to 50% but average say 20%.
Some DC charging during the daytime pretty much every working day.

Mainly 80mile return commute over the Brecon Beacons. And mainly charged at home.

Coincidentally, I have just purchased my first EV, a 2021 MG5 long range. It has 70,000 miles on the clock and drives faultlessly. The term SOH and %, I assume in some way is related to the battery? Where do I find this figure, and what does it mean?

I’ve worked out the SOC means State of Charge.

State of Health. It can only be read with a ODBII reader.

Like all things with rechargeable batteries, EV high voltage batteries deteriate over time. The rate of this isn't linear and is also governed by treatment. Much the same as an ice vehicle, you rev the nuts off it when it's cold, it wears the internal components. Flooring it when the battery is cold will put undue strain on it, same goes for rapid charging at the big dc chargers, shoving 150kw/h into a battery isn't treating it nicely. Other things they don't like is being left at 100% charge for long periods of time or below 20% for long periods of time.

Ev batteries usually have an overhead (unusable) part to the battery so often the first % or so of health isn't really noticed.

The MGs battery warranty is around 70% from memory, I don't think I've seen any anywhere near that quoted on here, in fact most are high 90's

Mine is going in for its 2 year 30k service next month and I'll be interested to see the result. I charge pretty much daily to 100% on a rapid charge. At a guess it's 99% as I'll see 249 on the range meter at 100% sometimes.

Without an OBD reader, when the car is fully charged turn on the car, turn everything off, heater wipers etc. Reset the accumulated trip, leave the car in Normal mode and see what the GOM, (Guess o meter) range is.
250 miles for a LR is SOH 100%, every 2% deterioration is 5 miles less.

I did as suggested. The car said 247 miles.

Finally got round to connect my obd2 to the car. MG5 FL 1y3m and at 100% SOH.

I am a low mileage user only about 8k I think and until now my primary charger was AC22kw (11 kw usable by car). Very few rapid charges.

Not many are aware but it is recommended to slow charge from 10%-100% twice a year to update SOH calculations. Not sure if otherwise the BMS follows some standard degradation formula (based on age & mileage) like in other EVs?

Yeah you are correct. It is in the manual somewhere. I was one of the sad people who read the manual while waiting for the car lol

Mine is slow charged to 100% a few times a year when I charged the car a long trip. Takes ruddy hours on the lamppost chargers lol An over night job for sure.

Hi Stuart. Just had the battery on my car tested today. 94% after 2 years and nearly 52000 miles on board. To mention that I use the car as a taxi in Ireland and I charge at home up 100% almost all the time, the odd time I use a fast charger for a boost. Ot was a bit of a shock as last reading was at 44000 km and it was 100%

Yep, similar kind of thing. 71 plate, 50k miles, occasional rapid charge, charge to 100% most of the time, however never let it sit when low SOC (<25%)

It’s a ‘trick’ most EV makers use, the initial capacity is calculated at more than a 100% (i.e 105%). The battery’s SOH will slowly decrease from the very start but you won’t notice as it’s always displayed @100%.

So when it starts decreasing suddenly at a much faster pace owners are surprised.

You can re-calculate the SoH if you think it may be be wrong by doing a battery calibration charge (discharge below 10% then AC charge in one go to 100% and let cell balancing finish).
